Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

I check the dipstick for water and the coolant tank for oil and all looked well.

So I'm figuring he should be prepared for a $1,000 repair bill?
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I posted this on the Boxter forum, but not a lot of folks on that forum. I'd like to get your opinion as it sounds similar to me of 996 issues.
As posted in the "engine died" thread last night:
Friend of mine was going to work in his '96 or'97 (I think) manual Boxter with 35,000 miles. when the check engine light came on and a few seconds later, she just quit. This is his DD driver, but he only drives about 5 miles 1 way to work in traffic.
I went to try and help him last night. The car had symptoms of a dead battery or bad starter. The engine would make an attempt to turn over, but wouldn't. Finally it started with plume of white dense smoke that hung to the ground. The engine sounded fine, though. Since it had been parked front 1st on a serious incline for 2 days and with all the attempts to start it, I thought that may have something to do w/all the smoke. I started again and again the engine sounded fine, but again all the white smoke. He said the smoke smelled rich in fuel. At that point, we just loaded it in his trailer.
I check the dipstick for water and the coolant tank for oil and all looked well. It was dark by now and the car parked in the grass, so I couldn't see it there was any leaks.
Any thoughts of what this may be? I had thought that may the EMS had determined an issue, hence the engine light and it just quiting. Once I got it started, I didn't get a chance to look down and see if the "check engine" light remained on and we weren't confident enough to start it a 3rd to to see.
Not to sound like his engine is KO'd but a seeping head gasket or cracked cylinder head may let coolant seep into the cylinder. Once started, it blows out white smoke as you described. But, it is repairable and not catostrophic. $$$$
Head Gasket on my '97 (first year of the boxster) when I owned it had the same symptoms. Tippy is correct. $$$$. Fixed and sold it the next week to get into my 996 a few years ago.
So I'm figuring he should be prepared for a $1,000 repair bill? More? I was figuring since I didn't hear any horrible noises, it probably wasn't a motor...or am I being optimistic?
Did you post on Porsche Petes Boxster Board?. In all respect to Rennlist PPBB is the bset Boxster forum. I owned a Boxster for 8 years...

Good luck
He might actually be "ok" IMO. You need to get the CEL code read.
The smoke could be a result of the parking angle or all the start attemps.
Let us know what codes it is throwing
Not sure about the check engine light. Boxster's will blow big white smoke at start up, but this sounds a bit more. Pat also check out

That was the forum I was on with my S. Good guys with alot of experience
Yeah! I just got the email info from Sean. I'm excited but nervous at the same time. Looks like I'll get to still see your races as well between class times.
Any word on the Boxster? Was that the racing green one?
