Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

We were going to replace the RMS if it was leaking but I had the biggest surprise.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

6 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

My friend and I replaced the clutch on my 1999 996 yesterday. Car has 36K miles and the clutch disk was worn and slipping. We were going to replace the RMS if it was leaking but I had the biggest surprise. No leak and not a drop of oil. We replaced the clutch on his 2004 996 two weeks ago so it was a little easier the second time. Total time was approximately 9.5 hours, which included putting the vehicle on jack stands. Overall it was not that difficult but you definitely need two people to make it easier.

POST 2Original post

Must feel good to do a clutch job without taking it to a dealer or indy. Great feeling of accomplishment no doubt.

POST 3 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

During "no" but afterward (after washing the dirt of my face, arms, etc.,) it was worth it...

POST 4Original post

What special tools/stands did you need? How high on the jack stands does the car need to be?

POST 5 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Perryinva, You will need a high quality hydraulic jack (preferable 2 would be better), four heavy duty jack stands, a transmission scissor jack (we got one for 60 dollars) and various metric sockets and wrenches. We had the jack stands extended almost fully which raised the vehicle about 15 inches, which still allowed the vehicle to be secure and safe (I can get the exact inches if you want). If you decide to do yours let me know and I will gladly give you more specifics including some tips. Hardest part the first time was reinstalling the transmission as it took awhile to line it back up. The second time it took five minutes and slid right in.
