JPS - you will pay though your a$$ for good/safe/clean parking in the City - But for what it is worth, when I lived in the city (32years) I parked all my P-Cars in the local parking garage without ONE PROBLEM.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Well, it is finally happening. I'm moving to NYC. I'm not going to part with the 993, but I also don't want the parking monkeys to adopt an attitude of "it is just a little scratch" sort of approach. So I'm looking for other options. I don't plan on driving it often...not at all in the winter, and weekends during the summer, as I don't need a daily driver in Manhattan obviously. So, anyone nearby have a garage space they want to lease out, or know of options in/around Manhattan?

POST 2Original post

Try Queens....... Long Island City. I used to use my car on the weekends only. LIC is a quick subway stop from midtown. A car is a liability there, the nicer it is the more vulnerable. Adjust your thinking, you'll get an ulcer if you don't. Good luck.....

JPS - you will pay though your a$$ for good/safe/clean parking in the City - But for what it is worth, when I lived in the city (32years) I parked all my P-Cars in the local parking garage without ONE PROBLEM. Really, there were higher end cars there, than my 993 - Don't sweat it amigo, just expect to pay 600 - 800 monthly easy. Good luck...

POST 4Original post

a billionaire walks in a NYC bank brank and ask for a LOAN!!!!! the cashier tells him that the balance in his account is 1.34 billion $$ and it is not that logical he would ask for a loan for $1000 for 2 weeks...... anyway he got the loan. the happy billionaire says OK, but with one condition.....since i am flying in 30 min i will have to leave the car here for these days..... the cashier calls the security guy which he took the car away..... tye billionaire walks in the branch 2 weeks after, returns $1000 no prob so far.... the cashier takes the money but ask the simple question. Mr. Norman? could you please let me know why a billionaire would like to borrow $1000 for weeks when he has already 1+ BILLION $? the guy replies..... you tell me a place to park my car in NYC for 2 weeks for $15 (interest)!!!!!!

POST 5Original post

We kept a flat in Gramercy Park for a few years and parked a 3.2 on 6th around 37th. Its not that bad in the garages. The car get's filthy (cover it and the wind buffeting will take its toll) but it was never touched. The issue is once its outside the garage. Unless the streets are in better condition your 993 won't clear all the bumps and pot holes. Quite frankly, other than some rubs under the front end, I think its time in NYC was its least dinged. Keeping the car outside the city is a hassle. We had a place on Shelter Island with a 2-car garage but never left the car there as we wanted the convenience of it being within reach.

POST 6Original post

I've lived and parked in the City most of my life, and still park there 1-2x per week (I'm in th e'burbs now). Here's the secret to never having scracthes/dings on you car: 1. Find the most EXPENSIVE garage you can, not the cheapest. The cheap garages are always horribly overcrowded, so the attendants have no room to park the cars and they ding doors everyday. The expensive garages-- where only the super wealthy park because money is not an issue for them-- have plenty of space, plenty of beautiful cars, and the attendants are generally much better. The diffference between the cheapest and most expensive garage (in the same general area) will be about $300 month--which, at $3600.yr-- will barely cover your dings/scratches (and certainly won't cover your aggravation) 2. Tip, tip, tip. And then tip again. Give your garage guys money all of the time, particlualry on the holidays. Again, the total at year end is a few hunded bucks-- well worth the extra special care your car will get. Parking a nice car in NYC is an expensive proposition, no doubt, but I always viewed it as part of the the living "premium" one must pay (along with private schools) to live in the City have the convenience of the City life, which cannot be underestimated (I know, as I gave it up to live in the 'burbs-- couldn't afford the "premium" that I mentioned with three kids). Follow these two rules and you will NEVER have a spot on your car. GBG

POST 7Original post

Well, take it from someone going through your EXACT hell right now, its a pain. I park my car in a garage in NYC. While the most expensive garage and tipping does work, I just pay more at the cheaper garage. That is, I have a reserved spot in my garage. The attendant never gets my keys, they can never move it, park it, or drive it and I park next to other reserved monthly parkers. I also use a car cover and I HIGHLY suggest you do. This keeps prying hands away and keeps the dust and grit that will most certainly accumulate on your car. I do however agree with GBG that you essentially need to bribe these guys as they stop at nothing. At my last garage, they used to clear out my spare change holder (aka ash tray) every time I parked. When I said something, three very well placed dings along the side of my car.... This after I tipped, and gave a Christmas bonus (yes, a Christmas bonus!) During the winter, I am moving my car out to Long Island to my girlfriends family house so I can sleep at night.

POST 8Original post

If most of your driving is going to be in the NJ side (as opposed to the LI side), I know of a cheaper parking structure in NJ that's convenient to public transport where you park yourself (no valets). Lots of porsches park there. PM me for details.

POST 9Original post

Why live in Manhattan?I did it for years, it's a pain with a nice car. I finally moved out to LI, I drive mine in every day and park in the same private garage(at the hospital where I work) and I do tip handsomely at Christmas time. I have had no problems.

POST 10Original post

How long does it take you to get home on Fri nites? It used to take me 2 1/2 - 3 hours. Manhattan looks real attractive after a few of those nites (it did for me).

POST 11Original post

Friday is the one day a week that I do the train. Typically takes 50-70 minutes to get home, fridays are torture I agree. I have two kids, Manhattan is out of the question for many reasons. To each his own.

POST 12Original post

I have been using a park and ride each day. Very cheap (about $6.50 per day for roud trip bus and parking. The car park is huge so there is plenty of space to park well away from everyone else - which is exactly what I do to avoid door dings etc. This way I get to drive on the roads that are mostly clear and then I can read/work/sleep while the bus handles the heavy traffic going into the Lincoln tunnel (I am on the NJ side). Barry

POST 13Original post

This is interesting reading. I thought it was only us brits who suffered from the low life idiot syndrome (car dings, dents and scratches). Thought most of the stateside kids had more respect and a generally better attitude. - A sort of - wow if I work hard I could get one of those - sort of respect. Seems we have similar problems the world over.

POST 14Original post

It should be that way, shouldn't it? I also find that imports, P-cars in particular, are the worst culprits as far as vandalism goes.

POST 15Original post

Adrian, As a Brit living in America I think it is fair to say that each country has its share of a$$holes. Barry

POST 16Original post

I parked in a reserved spot in a hoboken town lot. Before that I parked at river and first. Bounded with the guys before driving in the porsche. Now I park in NYwaterway in JC. Never had a problem but I have seen a lot of cars hit. The best was one morning there was a girl trying to wedge he honda between two cars. the was bouncing off both cars. She did not care!! I honk and gave he a look. she drove away.

POST 17Original post

Man oh man, I am so not going to bitch anymore about parking in Chicago. For $400, I get to park 2 cars by myself and the garage is attached to the high-rise so I don't have to leave anywhere to get to them. The p-car gets it own spot next to other residents while the appliance is down with the masses/tourists/can't_park_worth_crappers I *used* to think that $200/month just to park a damn car was ridiculous but compared to nyc, that's (real cheap) peanuts I still think that $45K that gets asked to *buy* a stupid parking spot is nutz, but c'est la vie..

POST 18Original post

GBG has the only solution that has worked for me. Most expensive garage around always has least number of cars. I have seen cheaper garages where for extra $$ you park your own, but I am wary because they still jam em in. Good luck.

POST 19Original post

I live on the West Side of Manhattan and park my 996 at a garage on 93rd St. & Columbus Ave. where you get your own space and can park the car yourself . . .and, it's heated. Cost is $400+ per month. PM me if you're interested in details.

POST 20Original post

A great option is the self park on 42nd st I think it's between 9th and 10th Ave.. When you come out of the Lincoln Tunnel (going into NYC) you stop at 42nd St and are facing the parking garage. Get a cover and park the car..forget about it. Fairly cheap and your car is left alone..there are tons of covered cars there. Josh

POST 21 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thanks so much for all your help. For the winter anyway, I found a private garage (well, 1/2 of one) in Forest Hills (very nice neighborhood), a few minutes walk from the express E train from Manhattan. We'll have to reassess during the summer, but for winter storage, this should be great. Thanks again.
