do i need to replace both fronts?

advice re: snow tire replacement

Suggestion

I don't think anyone is going to say the best answer is just replace one tire with something different or to just replace the fronts.

Suggestion

If the tires are a bit worn down i'd replace both fronts.

advice re: snow tire replacement

Use combo of different compounds, tread designs, etc

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

before i stored my winter set last year, i got a nail in the sidewall of pass front my dunlop m2(225/40/18) formy c4s. questions: do i need to replace both fronts? can i use other brands for fronts (can't find same tire)? thanks

POST 2 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

hate to bump, but really need adivce. thx

POST 3Original post

The best answer is replace all 4 with matching tires. However, I know that is not the answer you want. I don't have any first hand experience with your situation but I can always hypothesize I do know each tire company uses a different method of achieving their respective snow traction using a combo of different compounds, tread designs, etc. The result is different levels of grip under different circumstances. It would seem logical that this could cause some problems (whether or not they have a effect is another question which I can's answer) in real world applications. For example, if the tire you replace has better or worst ice traction than the others it would seem there is potential problems with activation of PSM, ABS, the operation of the awd system, etc, when you experience icey conditions. The conservative answer is if you can't find a replacement then replace all 4. I don't think anyone is going to say the best answer is just replace one tire with something different or to just replace the fronts. However, that doesn't mean it won't work. It just is not optimal.

POST 4Original post

How worn out is the opposing front tire. If it isn't too worn, i bet you can just replace the one tire with the nail. If the tires are a bit worn down i'd replace both fronts. Bobby

POST 5 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

not very worn. this would be the 3rd chicago winterand i drive 20mi/day. i'm bringing it in to napleton tues. great to see snow today without my snow tires!

POST 6Original post

Haha, no kidding. Im out in the southwest burbs today and there is about 4-5 inches on the ground out here. Bobby

POST 7 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

the kicker is that i can't find that same tire at tire rack anymore. guess i'll replace both
