Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Coverage and how to read this overview
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I currently live in Kuwait, and got a great deal on a 996 from a friend, and am now hooked on Porsches. I really wasn't a sports car guy, but knew it was a great car in great condition for an irresistible price. However as I recently found out, gulf spec cars can't economically be imported back to the states, so I'll be selling my baby here in a year or so when I leave.
Being now hooked on Porsche, I'm now pondering my replacement strategy. I'm vaguely planning flying back to the states when I return & picking one up from wherever and driving it cross country to see the family & friends I've missed being overseas for so long. With no commitments it would make for a nice leisurely trip, but would probably entail me buying or putting a good chunk of cash down on a car site on seen. I could get it delivered to my parents and stored indoors for a little bit until I get home, but that still doesn't remedy the sight unseen issue. It will be my daily driver, and I need to pick up a ride reasonably quickly when I get back.
I'm a year out from buying, so not in a particular hurry, but looking for any bright ideas on a strategy to get the right set of wheels when I get home and am in a good position to bounce around to go pick it up.
Budget wise I'm looking at another '05 996 or an early 997. The first run of a model always scares me a little, but in general newer is always better.
Any particular thoughts on the 996 vs 997 comparison, other than newer is generally better? Aesthetically I'm not too worried, I like the 996 headlights a little bit better. The lack of a spare in the 997 scares me a touch, and the official option of getting one and buckling it into the back seat just seems a little wrong, although I can't quite completely reason out why.
I've got a tiptronic now and like it, but think I'll have to go with a stick for the next one for all the classic reasons, although I hear they are marginally more prone to the RMS failures than the tips. If I found the right tip I might take it though.
The base 996 has more than enough power for me, so I'm not worried about an S or anything just for the power. What does the S bring to the table other than a couple extra ponies?
I'll end up living in Colorado. I know it will never be a 4x4, or as good in the snow as a truck/SUV, but will a C4 be something I should think about for a daily driver in unpleasant weather? Is the extra weight, mileage, extra
parts to break/maintain & decreased space of the C4's over the C2's give you much?
Any thoughts on PASM being worth it for a daily driver that will see a couple DE events a year tops?
If you can afford an early 997, I wouldn't be afraid of it. In any important sense, the 997 isn't an all-new car, it's an evolution of the 996 platform.
