The dealer says that as Posrche is supplying the parts, the warranty runs concurrent to my warranty, in other words, there is no additional warranty for the repaired engine.

Once water has run through the lubrication system all bearings must be replaced...which means engine has to come apart.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

The "add more coolant light" on the dash went on. I brought it to the dealer. The dealer discovered that my 2001 996 coupe has coolant in the oil and oil in the coolant. It is still under warranty. The dealer is waiting instructions from Porsche-the dealer says that normally Porsche would send a new engine to be installed in the car. However, there are apparently no new engines available anywhere at this time and so Porsche may instruct the dealer to rebuild the engine. What do you think?

POST 2Original post

Depending the skills of their head mech, that could be scary. Can't believe all the extra motors Porsche built for the RMS deal have been "used up" And what about the warranty?

POST 3 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

The dealer has now been advised by Porsche to repair the engine. The dealer says that as Posrche is supplying the parts, the warranty runs concurrent to my warranty, in other words, there is no additional warranty for the repaired engine.

POST 4Original post

Sorry to hear this... really sucks. If you plan to keep it a long time get an extended warranty... or put it down as trade in for a new one...

POST 5Original post

Hmm. Almost 90 percent of the time, the oil/coolant heat exchanger is what causes this problem. I've heard of this being replaced without the need for a new engine. Did the dealership confirm this was not the problem?

POST 6Original post

I had a new engine put in my 1999 C2 about three months ago because of the same problem - at 33K miles on the car... and I was quite proud that I had not had an RMS problem... Oh well... I got a new engine at Porsche's expense.

POST 7 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

PTEC-the dealer will not have the engine apart until early next week so it could well be the oil/coolant heat exchanger-Let's hope it is only that!

POST 8Original post

The dealer should be able to check the heat exchanger with the engine still in the car. Basically all you have to do is remove the compressor and you can slide it out under the intake distributor, it does make a huge mess though! Typically the way to check it is to put water in both sides and then pressurize one side and check for air bubbles coming out of the other side.

POST 9Original post

I just got over this exact same problem out of warranty. I brought the car to the dealer the last two times the light came on and the third time white smoke poured out and it was deemed a "mixer." Althought the car was with the dealer for ten weeks, I got an engined goodwilled from Porsche. My original had 24k on it and was out of warranty. Be pushy. This is a known problem. Put pressure on them. My car was a 2000 996.

POST 11Original post

Generally there are a couple things that can cause this to happen. The water to oil cooler will fail and send oil into the cooling system....making a huge mess, but is generally inexspensive to fix( replace cooler and flush cooling system). The other thing that could happen is a crack in a cylinder head or a failed head gasket causeing coolant to enter the lubrication system....much more exspensive to repair. Once water has run through the lubrication system all bearings must be replaced...which means engine has to come apart.

POST 12 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Yesterday, the District Porsche Service Manager came to the dealership to look at the engine. He told the dealer that the engine would have to be replaced. I am waiting now to learn how long it will take for this to happen.

POST 13 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Good news-the new engine is in the U.S. and will be installed next week. In the meantime, I have a Cayenne S loaner, which ain't all bad. My experience with Park Place Porsche has always been excellent.

POST 14Original post

Great news. Glad to hear that you will be able to enjoy the car for many years. Nice to see a happy ending.
