Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

It had last week a loose front outer right tie rod end which I replaced; still some play on that side indicating also a loose front inner right tie rod end.

I have heard that the 993 series cars have short outer tie rod life spans, and that a BMW part which does not have the plastic lining can be used for longer life.

At this time I want to see what it would take to change all such joints.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

1 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I have a 2001 911 turbo which I bought new 4 years and 25k miles ago. It has: 350 hillclimb miles not including fam or descent, 850 including fam and descent. 230 NHIS miles - left hand banked turns - some drivers school, some time trial. Maybe 30 autocross miles. 26k miles total. It had last week a loose front outer right tie rod end which I replaced; still some play on that side indicating also a loose front inner right tie rod end. Now a comment about what some consider a lesser brand, which will have some bearing on the ultimate question. For 10 years I had a 1987 corvette that I used similarly (it was almost as fast in times as this car; it was not stock but all the suspension parts were except shocks). The rear toe links on the corvette had plastic-lined spherical joints, which would go bad in such a way that there would be play under load but not when you tested it unloaded. This was demonstrated several times to me. Considering all the above, including the comment about corvette plastic lined joints: What suspension joints in the 996 are plastic lined? Ball joints? Tie rod ends? Sway bar links? Front inner suspension bushsings? Rear suspension bushings? At this time I want to see what it would take to change all such joints. I have heard that the 993 series cars have short outer tie rod life spans, and that a BMW part which does not have the plastic lining can be used for longer life.
