Suggestion

To add to what '99 said, it will trigger the fan to come on when you disconnect the temp sensor on the intake but it does not guarantee that the fan will come on, on its own from high temps.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

10 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Anyone know. I never see or hear the compartment fan ever. I have in the past but is there anyway to test to see if it works. It's even been through a service at the dealer and I don't think it is on the list of stuff to check.

POST 2Original post

The fan should seldom turn on if your cooling system is running properly. High coolant temperature as well as high engine compartment temps will activate it. To test it, warm up the engine and then unplug the engine compartment sensor cable from the sensor. The fan should start immediately. The sensor is on the passenger side of the engine, on top, between the first and second intake tubes. In normal operation, this fan only comes on when the engine compartment temperature reaches something like 180F or coolant temperature exceeds 225F. You can also test it by pulling the sensor out of it's mounting grommet and heating it with a hair dryer. When it gets hot enough, it will kick on.

POST 3 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thanks. Now to try and find the sensor and the intake tubes you talking about.

Follow the wire from the fan. It will splt and one length will go to the sensor on top of the right side of the engine.

POST 5Original post

To add to what '99 said, it will trigger the fan to come on when you disconnect the temp sensor on the intake but it does not guarantee that the fan will come on, on its own from high temps. Mine stopped coming on once a horned toad fell into and died. I could unplug the sensor and the fan would come on, but it would never oome on when the engine was hot. Before, it was always running in the summer time everytime I drove it. I believe the fan creates airflow for the alternator too.

POST 6Original post

Another fan question from a 'newbe'? Isn't this the fan (I hear what appears to be a fan) that comes on when the engine is first started, and goes off after about ten or twenty seconds? Thanks, Patrick

POST 7Original post

No. That's the secondary air pump which runs for a minute or 2 from a cold start.

POST 8 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quotes source post: 5295906

No that is the air pump. It has something to do with emissions. It located on the drivers side right by the coolant expansion tank.

POST 9Original post

Thanks guys. You never no until you ask! Thanks again, Patrick

POST 10 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

btw I did find the connector and the fans works. thanks for the info.
