new or used, i would stay with a porsche 01 turbo or 997S as you mentioned.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I am thinking about the replacement for my current 02 Carrera Cabrio...want more power!. A 01 turbo is definitely an option, even a 997 S, but I was wondering how good those V8 Esprits are. Would it be crazy to use one as a daily driver?
Yes. The Esprit is a great car but it's not a good daily drive imo. It's a great weekend car, but the ergonomics, ingress/exit, and other factors are a pain imo. When you add the fact that they do require more maintainance than the Porsche, and the fact that few dealers know much about working on them, they can be a problem. None of mine were a huge problem, however, I had factory guys working on them and I never missed scheduled maintainance.
Have you spent some seat time in one?
Roy
Roy,
Thanks for the feedback. I have not spent seat time in the Esprit...I have read magazines reviews: supercar thrills and power but reliability a concern. I'' probably end up with another Porsche, but the prizes for the Lotus are really tempting when compared with other exotics like the Ferrari 355
that's only the
initial
price. the service is probably closer to a ferrari than to a porsche so you probably spend just as much if not more in the end.
DRIVE IT - it is a crazy drive like a go kart. Much better handling than the 996.
Problem is that if you are anything above 5.7 (I guess since I am 6.1), it is too tight.
AND it is definitely not a daily driver in terms of maintenance.
new or used, i would stay with a porsche 01 turbo or 997S as you mentioned.
I've driven the esprit, and wihle it feels very powerful and had a nice exhasut note, i was told by the owner that the reliability was very suspect and maintinence was pretty steep., the dealer network is also much smaller than porsches, and for the minimal degree of exoticism over a p-car, i don't feel its worth it.
also, i hear that lotus is going to replace the esprit soon!
Guys, thanks for the feedback...I got the message: unless money is not an issue and it could be a 2nd or 3rd car in my garage, the Lotus V8 is "too exotic" for my needs.
If I had the means I would park one in my garage... just to @#$#@ cool. And those interior seats are lovely.
A great site for Lotus:

I have always dream of owning one... more so than a Ferrari... I always tell my wife that the car in the photo has been waiting for me (still in the dealer after two years...)
Not a daily driver but if taken good care it can treat you back well... the relationship between owner and car is closer than with a Porsche because it requires more from you in terms on care (no hard shifts from 1st to 2nd - weak link in the tranny... and the Renault source tranny is no longer in production, one of the reasons the car is no longer built.... and slow sales). It is a nice car...
check the condition of the interior, especially of the dashboard and the leather all around.....of a 5+ year old esprit....
it looks and sounds like a 10+.....sounds like one......
built quility is not as expected....and not at all...of porsche standards....
sorry, cannot comment on engine, mechanical reliabillity since i have never owned one...
i wouldn't buy one....especially when my other options are ( as yours...) a 996 tt or a 997.....
