Want WAY too much for used rims with curb rash and worn out tires.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hi all
Well finallyhere is the story.
Back in 2002 when I first looked at purchasing my current 1999 996 cab..it had chrome turbo twists. They were a little toomuch.. for me. Eventually I worked a deal that the Dealer would swap some Sport Designs from another car. At the time, I thought all 18 inch wheels were the same widths/offsets(wrong). Well I drove the car for 4 years until one day realizing (through Rennlist) that I had friggin Boxster wheels!!!!!! Well of course I could not sleep at night after this information reared its ugly truthI started to seek other wheels. I sold my Boxtser set (through Rennlist).I started looking at all other OEM options and really only liked 18 or 19 inch Sport Designs. I eventually (through Rennlist) decided against 19s and bought a set of aftermarket 18 black/polished lip. At first I liked themmy car is Guards red and the black/polished/red seemed cool. After just 4 months though, they seemed not to work. I had the car lowered with H/R sport springs. That looked much betterbut still seemed tooghetto for an otherwise very tasteful, classic looking car.
Meanwhile, my brother in law caught the Porsche bug and bought a nice 2000 triple black 996 cab. He hounded me all last summer about how cool the wheels were..give em to meetc. So in the dead of winter I called him one night and said if you want em ..you got em. We worked out a deal that he would buy them when I found and mounted a different set. So I of course go shopping everywhere you can find Porsche wheels. Wheelenhancement/Ebay/Craigslist/Rennlist..and a half dozen Porsche or car forums. I had decided to stay with OEM, and narrowed it back to a 996 fit set of 18 Sport Designs or 19 Sport Designs. I was again drawn to the 19s..However, there are very few 996s with these wheels. A couple of nice folks(through Rennlist) did send me some pix with the 19s on a 996..but it is really hard to tell if they look right without seeing in person. I then found a set on Ebaybought themand the guy disappears.I had to file a claim and got my money back. For the next 3 months I literally looked every day..everywhere I could find, to locate a nice reasonably priced set of OEM 19 Sport Designs..Let me tell you.THERE IS NO SUCH THING.
I have had countless people 1.jack me around..say they want to sell but dont when it comes time to really do it. 2. Try to sell something other than what I tell them I want. 3. Want WAY too much for used rims with curb rash and worn out tires. Or 4. Try and rip me off( thats another story we wont get into now). Along the way I had seen a brand new (new old stock) set of 18 Sport Designs on Ebay, by a Porsche dealer in NY. They even had the rare 8 fronts instead of the usual 7 inchers. The reserve was way high and nobody even bid. I saved it in my ebay .
Finally after all this, I decided that the 19s were not meant to be.and (through Rennlist) heard overwhelmingly that the best combination of looks and performance for a 996 is OEM 18s. I looked up the 3 month old Ebay listing. It had the Dealers phone number. I called the parts dept. I asked if they still had the wheels that were listed on Ebay 3 months ago(long shot I know)They did!!! I negotiated..
So I wound up coming full circle and getting a Brand new ..never mounted ..set of OEM 18 Sport Designs for less than a mediocre curbed up set goes for on Ebay. I bought new tires. and spacers all around (15mm front/18mm rear)
Thats the story and Im sticking to it!!!! And now for you viewing pleasure
Congratulations. These are my favorite OEM wheels. They look fantastic on your car. 99% of the time, ebay is a pleasure to business on...that other 1% can really be an adventure.
This is the best looking wheel for the 996 period. Just add the Aero parts and you are done. What tire size did you end up with? I got a set for mine and will get rid of my 19's as soon as I get my PSS10 suspension on.
Congrats on the Sport Designs! That so far is my favorite wheel and what I want to go to when I can get rid of the 17's mine came with.
What would be your fee to work another deal from that dealer?? Just kidding, great look you have. Enjoy!
Very nice! I too went through the same anxiety...settled with the OEM Sport Designs. They are beautiful wheels and they look great with the Aerokit. I'll hold off on telling you what's next... suffice it to say that they will be up for sale within the next month...excellent shape, no curb-rash.
I also have 285/30s in the rear. It adds a nice touch to the car over the 265s.
Big fan of the sport designs. Heck, I own them. But now, I'm getting that Champion RG5 Monolite bug. I can't remember who bought them on Rennlist and posted a picture of them looking phenomenal on their car, but damn them. I thought I was done with mods.
Yes, Chris, something like that. Thanks.
And my bank account just took a hit after the RoW upgrade. Why delay the inevitable, eh? Might go after them once I get in some more track days.
Damn it Ben. You have them too?! Again, very sweet. Great looking car.
Curiously, how do you like the rear bumper fins that are part of the Aerokit I package? I don't have them and thought they looked pretty good without, but I can see from the top picture in your post that they definitely complete the swooped lines of the rocker panels.
I'm not trying to clown on the silver aerokit MK1 above it, but you can see how the rear strakes follow the lines of the side skirts which is just an obvious benefit of going with a kit that was designed in a holistic manner that only a factory can put forth or a very expensive aftermarket vendor like Techart.
Without these fins that are so hate it or love it (I love them), the narrowbody **** end looks weaker since everywhere else you got the extra "flair" or flares I should say; don't neglect the **** end. Don't do it!
BTW, the red car isn't mine, but I just happen to be a big fan of MK1 fully aerokitted cars.
Seriously, do it man. I got a good eye for style. It's all about balance, the yin and yang. Do it all or stay home.
Great. Thanks Ben. First wheels and now the fins. Thankfully, I already have a chip, exhaust, plenum, etc.
Seriously, I hear you on the fins. I have been waffling back and forth on them since I got the car and after seeing the red car you posted, really think they look pretty damn awesome. I'll look into it when I'm at the dealer on Friday to prep my car for the Pocono DE on Sat.
rear fins were an option on GT3s I believe. You are welcome to check out my car in person when we have our spring drive.
