But according to this list of used cars from Consumer Reports (I know, not exactly the bible) they list used 911's as reliable used cars except for the 2003 model year.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

But according to this list of used cars from Consumer Reports (I know, not exactly the bible) they list used 911's as reliable used cars except for the 2003 model year. Any ideas why? BEST OF THE BEST These are models that have performed well in CR road tests over the years, and have proved to have several or more years of better-than-average reliability. Listed alphabetically. POST 2Original post

It's Consumer Reports. In case you can't tell by the list, CR likes primarily one type of car. A Japanese one. C.

POST 3 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I kinda figured that, but I was still surprised they singled out the 2003 model year for 911's...

POST 4Original post

Having owned several German cars over the years, and a couple of Japanese, I can tell you where many German car mechanics are, and I haven't a clue where a Japanese specialist is. The question is, is reliability your primary concern when choosing a car?

POST 5Original post

Quotes source post: 5273682

Wasn't 2003 the year the Cayenne was released. Probably is a mix up.

POST 6Original post

That is a good question, why 03? Maybe the guy compiling the list owned one and his motor blew right after his RMS got repaired As far as Japanese and reliability goes, none better to be had and the list should be dominated by them as is. I was surprised not to see one MB make the list.

POST 7Original post

My last 6 vehicles have been German. 4 BMW's and 2 Porsche's. I put over 500k miles on those BMW's collectively, and had virtually no troubles with them. I performed the routine maintenance and that was that. They were never in the shop for anything other than maintenace outside one occasion with my 540. It had a recall on some engine bearings, but those were replaced under warranty and were never an issue to begin with. I had an engine replaced in my first 911. I sold it shortly thereafter, but I know the current owner has driven it some 30k miles since without any issues. My 997S has yet to be anything other than perfect. I guess my point is I have a lot of miles on German cars, and my experiences have been virtually trouble free. I would put any of my German cars I have had up against anything the Japanese are making as far as reliability.

POST 8Original post

Quotes source post: 5273851

I am half German and a bit biased with the German cars. They simply do have some of the finest autos made in that market, not many can compete w/them IMO. But to put them up with the Japanese, speaking reliability only, NO CONTEST. The Japanese will slap them down as they would any others. This is not to say one can not experience a very reliable American or German car as there are many. It's about the best reliable cars as a whole, in general terms. If one is searching for a trouble free vehicle and that is the main objective, a BMW, Mercedes, or whatever does not even compare to say a Toyota or Honda. And yes, like I stated earlier, I am biased.

POST 9Original post

I am skeptical about seeing Acura's and Honda's up there for 2003. There were major tranny issues with these cars. The tranny on my 2003 TL gave up after 50,000 miles.

POST 10Original post

The Japanese make great sewing machines. Quiet, reliable, they do their jobs. Nothing really happened in '03 in the way of major developments. I figured it was a sampling error. With the new Consumer Reports Survey just out, it's time to make sure all '03 owners participate to lift the scarlet "U" (unreliability) from their no-more-troublesome-than-other-year steeds.

POST 11Original post

Consumer reports uses fairly detailed subscriber questionnaires for its data. On a low volume car like most Porsches, I'd bet that it would not take many problem cars to create a spike in overall problems for one model year. I'd bet it's an statistical anomaly

POST 12Original post

Quotes source post: 5273986

yea? GTR not fast enough for you that's slapping them german sausages silly on the cover of every major publication including the reputable UK rags? mr. metcalfe (editor of evo mag), who happens to own some very fine cars himself and has driven more super cars than any of us can ever will... calling the GTR an amazing car in and out, bespoke, recognizing the awesome achievement proper? go sit in a civic or honda in the showroom. the interior design and quailty is unreal and then u find out it's only $18Gs and gets it done period. c'mon dude. you soundl ike an idiot here.

POST 13Original post

Quotes source post: 5274237

Yawn. Oh, is that you Benji? Clearly your conservative, well-thought insights are the mainstay of what everyone believes. Thank you for your astute guidance and indepth analyses. yet........what creates character are imperfections. People, cars, locations are memorable because they aren't simply average. The continual drive toward perfect balance of all mechanicals, systematically wrends character....making the car.....much more like a dependable sewing machine. The 996, while an excellent car, has less character than the early 911's--making the 996 better for transportation than simple driving enjoyment--as many early 911 owners will testify. Over the years, increasingly, you can ride in a car blindfolded, get out, and have little idea what car you were in. Japanese transportation is excellent.

POST 14Original post

Honda makes an astonishingly good car in every segment they compete in except for the sports car. The S2000 is obsolete and rumor has it will be replaced one of these years.

POST 15Original post

Quotes source post: 5274748

Eh, I think Ben's right on this one. If anyone mentions the word "soul" I think I'll scream. Character CAN be created by imperfections, but it can also be created by perfection. The Honda Civic EX is an astonishingly good car for $18k...I owned one for a few years and sold it to get the FX. I was always enamored by the way everything worked so perfectly in unison to create a smooth driving experience. As for the second statement, I'm not sure why that's a bad thing. I often think I must be one of the few people that purchased a 911 in spite of its quirks, not because of them. Kind of reminds me of these people that store these cars away all winter and rub them with diapers and obsess about the color of the front marker lights. PLEASE...I own an AWD car with an expensive badge out front that was made to be flogged, so I do so. I think too many people are looking for an epiphany, not just a capable sports car, er...grand tourer, really.

POST 16Original post

Quotes source post: 5274748

Going to have to disagree with you here as I interpret your recogntion of character as a manifestation of porsche blinders. If RMS/IMS is character, I'd like NONE of it with my 996 Carrera, please. Where a remanufacturered engine is a bonus on a car I find to be absolutely ridiculous. I want to drive and I want to drive with the thought that this performance machine is also reliable as all heck and can take the "abuse". As lovely sounding and looking and driving the F355 is, i would never want one due to its character flaws , its rather cantankerous personality along the reliability, maint front.

Same here. Out of my last 7-8 cars, two were Japanese. The transmission on the 01 Acura TL went around 60K miles. Not a good sign. The other was an RX300 and drove like a boat. Sold it in 8 months time. Don't get me wrong, majority of Japanese cars are to get from Point-A to Point-B whereas German cars are more fun to drive and not for the masses really.
