Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Just to test the waters, I'm going to call the local P-car dealer and see A) what they quote and B) if they are at all open to trying to get a warranty repair authorized since the original warranty expired in May.

We've had super hot weather (like everybody else) I wonder if it was due to shutting down with the engine too warm.

These are separate views of the same evidence. Frequency alone does not establish a fix, and these counts must not be added together.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I'm not stressed about it. Bought the car a month ago. Dampness on seal discovered during PPI. Independent dlr wouldn't budge on paying to repair it then (they did pay for a critical fix) or warrantying for 90 days. Dealer doing PPI said it could be a couple of months or a couple of years before it developed to a active leak. I baked in the anticipated cost in my purchase decision (b/c I'd found the car I wanted).
My highly regarded local independent (Music City P&A) has only done 4 of these repairs and quoted me around $500 plus parts to complete. He also said I can live with it for a while and wait until I need a new clutch, which I appreciated since he wasn't rushing me to bring it in. Just to test the waters, I'm going to call the local P-car dealer and see A) what they quote and B) if they are at all open to trying to get a warranty repair authorized since the original warranty expired in May.
Anyone have any recent good or bad experiences trusting this repair to an independent? Mine said he hasn't had any return with a recurrence and mentioned the only reason to go to a dealer is if it is a repeat situation and a new engine might come of it. BTW - I've searched and read up a lot here and on RennTech, so please, no "Do a search" replies. Just seeking some current thoughts for "The Rennlist Family"
Thanks,

'02 Targa - stock, for now
If the independent shop is experience with the RMS repair and if they are willing to stand behind their work, there's no reason not to trust them. Your inde shop is being really honest by telling you that you should wait for the clutch to go bad and do both at once. You should be looking to pay around $800-$1000 for the RMS repair.
You can relatively easily do the seal yourself with the tool that i purchased. The hardest part if you dont have a lift is supporting the tranny...
$500 to do the RMS is a great deal though if they stand behind their work. The Pcar dealerships offer 2 year warranty, so if the indy doesnt offer a warranty at that $500 price, i would pay the difference and go to the dealer...
If you want to, or if you want to get it for your independent mechanic to make sure it is done right, i will rent the tool out for a nominal fee. It makes it fool proof on getting the seal in right. Retails for around $300...
Good luck and don't make it out to be more then it really is...I consider it maintenance!

We've had super hot weather (like everybody else) I wonder if it was due to shutting down with the engine too warm. Temp gauge and oil pressure have been fine though.
Oh well, paper is under the car to monitor. Thanks for the suggestions. May give the oil stabilizer a try if I see the drip re-appear.
