Read evidence and context
Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

0 original-poster resolution reports. Counts can overlap; they are not unique people or a success rate.
0 discussions have direct query context; 0 report a fix in that context. Other evidence may inherit the discussion’s subject.
Suggestion
Even now, when I test drive newer models, I don't want to "upgrade," unless I would be moving to a 997 S or a Turbo.
Leading evidence: 'Test drive newer models, i don't want' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Test drive newer models, i don't want' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

Almost everyone here has test driven lots of P-cars before buying one.

And then test drove more P-cars AFTER buying theirs.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

yes, test drove an 01 and 02 back to back. 02's have more power down low. IMO 02+ looks better and also has better interior, aerodynamics.
Both are great cars, you can't go wrong either way. You have to decide if the 02's are worth the extra $$$. I was coming form a Z06 corvette, so I thought the 99-01 didn't have enough power.
Originally I was looking at 00 & 01's then decided to spend the extra money and get an 02. I recently bought a C4S.
Test drove 2000 and 2002. The driving differences are quite subtle, but palpable. 3.6L has a little more low end torque, and around 3,000 rpm sometimes I feel a little bit of boost (I think that's the Variocam Plus kicking in). The 2002 suspension is stiffer, but to be honest, I didn't really notice any difference driving around in the suburbs.
Cosmetically the difference come down to headlights, glovebox and cupholders (and rear glass for the cabs).
I, too, thought about the same issues when deciding which to buy. The 02 is what I bought based upon, among other things, the Pano addage: buy the latest model P car you can afford.
I have instructed many 996's and, to me, the differences are worth while if you compare bone stock versions of each. Also, what is the typical length of time you plan to hold onto this? Are you going
to mod? Is this for street or track or street/track use? What mileage is on which car? Although, not likely, is there any warrantee left on the 02?
It was a no brainer for me, 02 is the best year 996. 03+ has MOST which I am not a fan of. For 4-5k more, you have a bigger engine, better interior, better styling front. That's a lot of improvement for just a few grand. Sound of 3.6 is even deeper.
Not saying 3.4L is not good. But 3.6L is better. Why not get the best if you have the money? There is a difference.
My suggestion is to go to a dealer and drive them both. Almost everyone here has test driven lots of P-cars before buying one. And then test drove more P-cars AFTER buying theirs. It's common to just "show up" at the dealer and check out their inventory. In fact, I just test drove some P's last week.
As for me: I test drove them both before buying my 2000 C2 (2000, 2002, 2003). To me the extra 10G+ wasn't worth the minor improvements/amenities. And they both had the same warranty (4yrs), so that wasn't a factor. I elected to save the cash, and forgo the added depreciation of the newer models.
I was a real n00b at the time, and couldn't tell the difference in handling or acceleration in the base models, although the S version had more oomph. If they has a 2000 S on the lot, I would've probably got that. Now I can only tell a difference between the newer models and my 2000 at WOT, but for normal driving, there isn't a bit of difference.
Even now, when I test drive newer models, I don't want to "upgrade," unless I would be moving to a 997 S or a Turbo.
