Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

all, in continuing my search for a car, i found a local 1999 996 that has a few option codes i have never seen before. the car was purchased in canada and then brought to the US soon after it's purchase. i am looking at the car this afternoon but the seller claims it was purchased in canada and then imediately brought into the US and shipped to seattle so the owner could get the color choices he wanted. the car has the following option codes: M113 VERSION FOR CANADA M130 CONTROL AND INDICATIONS IN ENGLISH LETTERING M465 REAR FOGLAMP, LEFT M553 VERSION FOR USA, CANADA *there is no foglight on the rear of the car...perhaps it was removed but i see no evidence of one ever being mounted **my concerns are: 1. resale value and whether or not a canadian version car is less valuable than an american version? 2. whether or not the option code M553(VERSION FOR USA, CANADA)puts the car in the same category as an ammerican version?? thanks in advance to all who respond william ceriale

POST 2Original post

rear fog light is simply a bulb inside the rear light assemby that lights when switched. It is only on one side. Not sure if US and Canada side differ.

POST 3Original post

I'm not sure about the codes but I have the opposite situation. I've got a 99 USA car in Vancouver Canada. If there is anything you want changed over to the US parts I'd be interested. A Canadian car difference could deal with the instrument cluster. The analog gauge will be in kph and Temperature will be in Celsius. Note the digital speed reading can be switched from metric to imperial. The climate control can also be switched metric to imperial. Cheers, Jeff

POST 4Original post

I think at this point for a 1999 996 resale value is not a big deal... Condition of the car, records and number of owners, accidents will make a much larger difference to price.

POST 5Original post

M113 code is child seat tether point and DRL's. The fog lamp as stated by JWEX16 is spot on. It's actually a Euro option that the US market don't mandate. When your flying up behind someone in fog it's to alert you to which side of their car is the drivers and which the passengers when you pass (!). You pull the headlight lamp out and all the way over to the right (or is it the left - cars under the cover and I'm lazy) Do US cars have the parking lamps? IE, you can turn on only the left hand front and rear marker lights and lock up the car and leave it. The intent is to protect your car if you park it on a dark section of highway or away from street lamps so no one hits it. There really isn't such a thing as a Canadian car (at least that can't be corrected in a day) as our cars came up from the US in the first place. Don't worry about these options - just worry if it was used in the winter up here in our horrible salt baths!

POST 6Original post

yea, I think the Canadian ones come with cheese too aye.. and like you can go get beer and stuff with them... yea aye.. no hosers though OK

Correction: Option code 025 = leatherhosers (Not that there is anything wrong with that)

POST 9Original post

I actually have a '99 canadian version as well. Not much difference. The only thing I hate is the fact I can't disable the DRLs.

POST 10Original post

Quotes source post: 8345301

Sure you can. The DRL is a relay installed for use in Canada. In fact there is a hack (universal DRL relay kit) somewhere for people who want to use the fog lights as their DRL's instead of the low power headlight setting that the DRL relay defaults to. I would guess that there is a US part# for the relay used for US operations. Find a friend with another 996 without the DRL option and see if you can read the part number.

POST 11Original post

From my limited research, US cars do NOT have a relay in place of where the Canadian relay is. If I just remove the relay, I heard it may cause issues with other lighting functionality (i.e. license plate light, tail lights, etc.). As you mentioned, the universal relay kit is more to convert the DRL to the fog lights... but i was hoping to disable DRL all together. Also, I have litronics so not sure how that will work with the universal relay kit.

POST 12Original post

Found this on Renntech: It might be worth it to pull the relays to see what happens. If there are issues with the lights then you can replace the relays and hunt down another solution. I'd also find another US 99-02 996 and see what the wiring difference is. You should be able to reverse this mod.

POST 13Original post

Cool, thanks for the relay tray diagram. I have not tried to pull those relays yet, but you are right, I should just try and see what issues arises if any.
