Guys, traffic is still terrible and we have this law wherein you can't use your car on a specific day depending on the plate number ending.

After driving that one night I decided to take my friend up on her offer to use her driver.

Nice pics Jose, its always interesting to see enthusiasts in another country especially in the Phillipines enjoying their porsches!! You guys got some sharp 911's out there.
Thanks for posting the pictures. I am amazed how you guys can drive Porsches in Manila -- you guys are warriors! I was in Manila for three weeks back in December and found driving there to be a nightmare! On my first night in Manila I decided I didn't need a driver to drive from Makati to Quezon City -- 8-10 miles tops, how bad can it be? An hour and 45 minutes later I finally arrived late for dinner, totally cursing up a storm! I asked for a driver the next day and kept him for the rest of my stay (I only drove 3 other times on Saturday and Sunday mornings).
I did see a lot of impressive cars over there. I stayed at the Rockwell Condos and the parking garage was full of new Mercs, BMWs, Porsches, Maseratis and a Ferrari Modena. There were also Range Rovers and Hummer H2s. What I find really amazing is the fact that I saw a base Cayenne (V6 version) on display at the Powerplant Mall for US$180,000!!! We have it good over here in the States -- the car tax in the Philippines is ridiculous!
programmatore, that is so true. Rediculous to drive porsches here so we usually drive out sunday morning at 5:30am at the south super highway. Funny it's called "super highway", it's got only two lanes and potholes every meter. The goodside....we can max out and really have fun with our pcars. The highway patrol just stares in amazement and grinns as we blast by him at 315kmh. And yes, taxes here for luxury vehicles are terrible, but the irony of seeing high end/rare cars are becoming rampant...in a third world country, as others say. The first CGT here priced at 38M or nearly $700th. Enjoy more pics. Been lurking a while, thought you guys would appreciate the pics.
Cheers!

Nice pics thanks for sharing!!
My friend in bangkok just bought a 997 carerra S and it cost him $280k. The taxes are ridiculous in Asia. Very nice rides you guys got there.
Thanks for sharing!
Where are the female passengers pictures?
When I was there growing up, the hot p car was the 930. There were just a couple back then. Basing on your pictures it surely has change. That is a lot of high end fast cars!!
Carrera mike, you Filipino? When were you last here? Here are more pics...

Jose,
Yes I am. Are you there in Phils? Where were the pix above taken at? Looks like U.P. in Diliman parking lot looking at the row of trees.
I left in 86. Last time I was there for a visit was in 2000. Too bad it was just for 12 days. It's sooo much fun there, specialy the car scenes every saturday nights. It was at Greenhills waaaay back when... of course night life was the best!!!
Small world. Diliman brings back memories. I used to drive from UP Diliman to Ilocos twice a year for Christmas and summer break in a '67 Mustang. Normally a 12 hour drive, I'd make it in 7
. Wonder how long it would have taken if I could have afforded a Porsche back then?
Palting
,
That must have been a nice drive back then. Specially when you cut those times to half
What year was that when you did those drive?
Did you go to college at University of the Philippines(U.P.)? My wife did her B.S. Statistics and Actuarial Arts there. Batch 85.
Jose
,
Are you there in Phils? Do you have a local website for your group with pictures? I would love to see more. I posted some pix for a friend there who own a very nice sample of a 993 GT2.
7 hours? Damn. Traffic in Manila is so f*cked up now that it will probably take you 2 hours just to get from U.P. Diliman to the North Expressway!
It took me close to 2 hours to get from Makati to Quezon City back in December (granted, I didn't know all the backroads so I got stuck in EDSA rush hour traffic). Also, they converted the Quezon Circle into one gigantic roundabout -- traffic just flows in one direction around the circle now. It is like a f*cked up Arc d'Triomph but 10 times bigger and more chaotic! After driving that one night I decided to take my friend up on her offer to use her driver. I kept him the rest of my stay and just tipped him 1,000 pesos/day -- best $20/day I ever spent!
Don't get me wrong. Traffic is terrible in Manila but I would go back there again for vacation in a heartbeat! The nightlife is great, food is wonderful, Boracay is only an hour flight now thanks to a new airport in Caticlan plus world-class golf in Tagaytay! If only there was a way to cut that 19 hour flight in half...
I would leave about 11 at night and make it to Laoag before daybreak. I had 100watt driving lights under the bumpers. That way, you avoid the traffic of the city, and the kalesa's (horse drawn carriages, for those that haven't been there) and the tricyccles of the small towns. The american equivalent would be something like the midnight rumrunner during prohibition
. Except I was a college student hauling a trunk full of laundry. Those were during the heydays of the now frozen dead dictator Marcos, and those roads led to his hometown, so most of the roads were glass smooth. I did HS and college in Diliman, B.S. Zoo batch 77. Fast cars, pretty women and the "Owl's Nest"
Mike and Jose, only the very, very rich could own a Porsche in the Phils during my time. You guys must be running with a very elite group.
Yes, in the city, a driver is an absolute must, programmatore. The city traffic has one thing nice about it: it makes you appreciate all those miles of sandy beaches more when you get away from the city
.
Yes, I am in Manila. Photos were at the Polo club in Forbes Park.
Mike, there are only 3 993 GT2s in the country...I know the owners. I wonder who?
Programmatore, that's funny but i agree Circle is a totally f*ucked up replica of the Arc d'triomph. I have a business there and my customers have difficulty crossing that 8 lane Circle.
Guys, traffic is still terrible and we have this law wherein you can't use your car on a specific day depending on the plate number ending. It sucks though because the affluent would just buy another car with a different plate ending. On the other hand,...it's a reason to buy a 2nd or 3rd pcar
Guys, let me know when you're visiting it would be awesome to meet you and shotgun with me in our regular sunday fun run. It would also be great to have someone bring some aerokit parts, exhaust mods, etc. for me in a balikbayan box.
You guys must be in your 40s, remeniscing U.P. days and the non existent traffic in those days. Do you miss life in the Phils.? Of course the ever wonderful beaches, world class golf, night life, shopping, restaurants, are a treat but what about the relaxed and laid back lifestyle as against the fast paced hustle bustle life over there? and don't you miss having drivers to chauffer you around, a helper, gardener, cook, nanny? I really missed life here when I was living in Switzerland.
Thanks for the posts. It's great to see the Porsche scene back home in Manila. Back in my time, the roads were halfway decent and you could actually park in reasonable spots. In those days, my friends with Porsches said that they had to fly in a mechanic from Hong Kong to work on their cars. It appears that there is a dealer there now - just looking at the sheer number of P-Cars.
Jose,
Do you guys have a club website? I would love to see more pictures! Link?
I heard they have a small track in Subic, but thats quite a distance to drive. If your club could build one there in metro Manila, I bet the returns from track fees from all the car fanatics there will be a four fold returns!
The two guys that I know that owns the GT2s are Brian/White 993 GT2 and John/Silver 993 GT2. I see the silver one in the pix above
Man I could only imagine all the fine fine models sitting in those passenger seats
LOL!!! Spoken like a true Filipino. As you know, any trip back to the Philippines entails going through long lists from a multitude of relatives to fill that Balikbayan box or boxes. Don't know about aerokits and exhaust mods, but I will gladly bring back a small but hard to obtain Porsche item of your choosing as payment for the shotgun ride. Let me know if you are ever in the northeast corner of Ohio, and I'll take you shotgun around my favorite tracks. Just bring me some tuyo, basi or lambanog
.
I second Mikes question. You guys have a club and website? Where, for heaven's sake, do you do a fun run on Sunday, the busiest and craziest shopping mall day of the week?
Mike, yes I know Brian. The silver gt2 now belongs to a guy named Manny. Most of the Pcars here just change hands among the members of the club. Regarding a website, unfortunately our club doesn't have any yet but we're working on it. I'll just post more pictures at the moment. We have our track days either in Subic or Batangas Racing Circuit. Regular sunday runs are along the south super highway and occasionally to the north. We take off at
5:30 am to avoid traffic and for safety reasons.
Palting, you forgot about the bagoong!
Mike, you mean fine models like this,...I'm not the guy in the background staring at her breast!

the only gullwing in the country.
Jose,
YES, fine models like that!!!
Man thats why I can never go back there in the Phils... I will get divorce!!! What a beauty!
But hey, If I do visit, you can count on me to carry some mod goodies for you. No worries.
Yes! Post more more more! Screw the cars. We want to see pics of the women looking at, sitting in, and standing next to the cars! I haven't been back in ages and am quite shocked as to how many Porsches there are there! That's awesome! With the labor rate being so cheap, you guys should definitely pool in money for a "club track". In fact, you may want to model it after the Barber Motorsports in Alabama! That track is supposedly the best facility track here in the US.
You can count me in also for balikbayan boxes full of Pcar parts.
Jose, if you email me the pix, I can post them for you on a bigger format. Specially the ones that M3Armand is requesting
I emailed you my email addy.
Ill tell you, I'll sacrifice the nice roads we have here just to have the fun you guys are having there with those cars
more pictures of chicks and cars soon. We're driving to tagaytay this sunday.
Jumper there is a porsche dealership here, as well as ferrari/maserati, rolls royce, and several stores that sell toys for the big boys.
Here they are. Sorry got too busy in work. Latest photo of club run to Tagaytay Highlands.

Mike, the last three chiks are not Filipino. Anyway if you have the TFC channel or get any Filipino program...you might be aware of a celebrity named Angel Locsin, one of Manila's popular showbiz personalities. Pls post a pic for Armand. By the way, she sleeps on my bed and goes home to my condo every night. Of course the wife knows about it, and she approves of it too. I almost forgot to mention that she's renting our unit. hahahah
