Leading evidence: 'Install above your garage doors' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'least used space' (1 discussions; 0 report identifying it and 1 suggest it). The most frequently discussed action is 'Install above your garage doors' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

They are usually installed next to the wall on which the doors are installed.

They now have a good home where they will be used for snow tires.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

One solution that worked for me is to by a set of tire hangers (what I call them) and hang your spares.
Looking for some advice... I put new wheels and tires on my car on Friday and now have a stack of 17" stock wheels and almost new PS All-Seasons in the garage. With the hardtops for two cars, a case of hardware from work, and the battlefield of mods in the garage, the last thing the wife wanted to see was the stack of tires. I was planning on keeping them as a backup set, especially since the tires are 90%+, but I've got literally nowhere to store them. Is there a market for the wheels at all? Would they fit a Boxster? Or, would I be better off removing the tires and trying to sell each seperately? I'm planning on eBay'ing them, but have very limited experience with eBay other than buying. I did some searching and found a few sets on there, with tires, but it didn't look like any had bids. Am I stabbing in the dark trying to get rid of these?
Thanks in advance for the help!
Nick
You can always put them in the side yard in plastic bags. They often go for $750 a set if they are in near new condition. They are great as track or snow tires
Nick - There are storage racks that can be installed above your garage doors that hang from ceiling joists. They are usually installed next to the wall on which the doors are installed. That is probably the least used space. Depending upon how tall your garage ceiling is, you could get 15" to 28" of clear storage height. This storage is out of the way and would be used primarily for items you rarly use.
I built my own in the garage (two houses ago so I don't have pics) using metal "L" brackets bolted to the ceiling joists. Then I bolted 2 x 4's supports to the "side" of the "L" bracket so they hung down about 20". Now bolt some 2 x 4's to the "support" 2 x 4's to form a joist to support the plywood decking. Think if it as a very short-legged workbench turned up-side down and then bolted to the ceiling.
Tim- That's a great idea, just don't know if it will work for me. I'm planning on hanging the top for the cab in the garage above my car with one of the lift systems for easy on,off. Side yard won't work- we're in a townhome. I've pretty much come to the conclusion to TRY to get rid of them if at all possible.
djantlive- thanks for the info. That helps me a good bit. I'm assuming that is with tires, correct?
Nick - Since it hangs from the ceiling it should not interfere with storing your top. You can make it as deep (measured from garage door wall toward the front of the garage) as you want or as narrow as you want. It could be 30" to 36" deep or only 18" deep. You determine what depth you need. Just a thought.
Nick--if you wanted to try to sell them, I would 1. Become a Rennlist member for $18 so that you can post the FS ad, and 2. Post it to the 924/944/951/968 Board. These wheels will fit these cars perfectly and they look really good on 944s and 968s [I will eventually get twists for my 968, but I will tell you that these wheels look a LOT better on the 968 than they did on the 996
I think the market is somewhere in the $500 range for a set of 17" twists in decent shape (excluding tires). For me, I just wanted to get 'em out of my garage, regardless of where they were stored. They now have a good home where they will be used for snow tires.
Thanks JTW- I'm in that same boat.
Vento- thanks for the reply. I've actually done that before posting this topic as I made the mistake before and didn't want to tiptoe the line. Joined "officially" Saturday before posting the topic but have no confirmation on my sig yet. How long does that typically take?
Hey Nick
One solution that worked for me is to by a set of tire hangers (what I call them) and hang your spares. I have a 2 car garage and recently put 18" tires on my 996. I kept the 17" OEM wheels including tires but am challenged too for garage space. That's when I came upon these tire hanger/studs from Griot's Garage (
www.griotsgarage.com)
. They come in pairs and short vs long lengths for about $70 a set. You mount them to your wall using the studs/beams and they can each hold a set of tires and wheels easily if properly mounted. Weight is not a problem and I've hung my set of tires on the back wall of my garage about 6 ft in the air out of the way of everything. I have a townhome too. Am about to buy another set so that I can hang my winter tires for my M3 too soon. Highly suggest them. Can send you pics if you want.
Just a thought...
Either try to wear the tires out during the winter, or as above, sell to the earlier Porsche crowd. The wheels are so common on early 996s and Boxters that they're worth practically nothing (supply/demand) even though they are strong and light. I also sold mine to a 944'er. I wouldn't bother listing on eBay (yet) since shipping costs are quite high. Try Craig's List or these boards first to hopefully snag a local buyer to use for winter or track wheels.
