Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I probably shouldn't waste bandwidth on a post like this, but wonder if this story might resonate with many of you. One of the oddest things I've noticed since I started driving the 996 daily is I am frequently getting panhandled at the gas pump. Really, this has happened 3 times in the last 7 weeks! I get gas in whatever part of town I need it and usually in "nice" areas so it is not because I am in the wrong place at the wrong time either. I am minding my own business pumping my gas and before you know it someone walks up with a big smile and a compliment for the car and then its "can you help me out with some <gas/busfare/etc>?" Yada, yada. And you're standing there with the tank half full so you aren't going anywhere. Anybody else with strange experiences associated with your P-car? (Disclaimer: there are ladies on this board, so probably ought to keep the stories clean!)

POST 2Original post

Just tell 'em that you can barely afford the gas for YOUR car these days.

POST 3 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Yeah really. We don't have it as bad as you guys in CA though. Right now it's only $2.65 for premium here. Bye-the-way, I felt guilty for posting such a non-technical thing here so I tried to delete it but it isn't an option. I guess if you have a thread that is replied to already then you cant delete it. Sorry about that.

POST 4Original post

Don't. We discuss all sorts of stuff here. Porsche enthusiast to Porsche enthusiast.

POST 5Original post

when they ask if i ever have a dollar, i just tell em, sorry all i have is a hundred and walk away... only to the ones that really annoy me over and over again.. and of course in broad daylight with plenty of people around.. .. after asking me for the past 7 times, one would think they would get the clue...

POST 6Original post

Happens to me all the time. When they say"Lemme have a dollar " I usually say" No prob...but I really need your shoes." Sorta like the bartering system, you want something from me ...well Skippy ..I need them super fine kicks you're wear'n.

POST 7 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hilarious! Of course I'm used to dealing with the panhandlers at airports, downtown, busy intersections etc, but had never been approached at the gas pump before! Guess I've just been lucky. PS. The delete function is back this morning, but I'll go ahead and leave this thread open since nobody has had any objections. Might be fun to hear more stories about different things that have happened to people in their P-cars!

POST 8Original post

Very funny, happens to me too now, especially at the pumps. I answer back by telling them, "cant you see I am so desperate for gas, I have to put regular!!!!" LOL Just kidding, actually, what I do is I look at them intently, real intently!! and smile the whole time, like as if i am interested. Then when they are all done with their yada yada yada, I look confused and answer them back in my native language, Armenian, and they get bummed out cuz they just realized they wasted their time cuz I dont speak english. I love it!!!!!!!!!!!! (but sometimes I do help them, gotta give a little) Peter

POST 9Original post

We have a couple of local panhandlers in town that always hang out by the city dock so when a certian known panhandler hits me up I just ask him for $5.00 before he can ask me for money(this is the guy who drives a Jeep cherokee and is not really homeless, but the tourists fall for his act)

POST 10Original post

Never happened to me. I usually fuel up in the morning when air is cold so I get more gas! LOL

POST 11Original post

Phila city council has proposed to make panhandling at gas stations illegal, with a $100 fine. It's already illegal at ATMs.

POST 12Original post

We have a well known (To the cops) panhandler that works a shopping mall strip. He parks his last years model Ford Expedition in the Carl's Jr. lot on the corner he works. His partner can be found either sleeping in the Expedition, or laying out on the grass lawn at Carl's. These two work in shifts, and on most weekends the lead panhandler brings out the wife and kids for extra impact. They use the sign, "Will work for food". If it wasn't for the high fuel prices here in California, I would have thought that these two would have retired by now? Guess it just goes to show you, that if your going to make a living bumming off others, don't buy yourself a gas guzzling SUV. Tom L 2002 C2

POST 13Original post

Its really hard not to give them something when you are getting in a shiney new Porsche. Not to get into a poverty/mental illness discussion, but when this happens to me I just feel guilty, not everyone was given the same opportunities in life... "Hey man, can I have a quarter?" "No, sorry" "Wait, you're not, you're driving that car!!??" "Ok, here's a couple bucks..." Or if they catch you when you are parking, don't even think of not giving them something!!

POST 14Original post

my quick fix...i just tell people i don't carry any cash on me

POST 15Original post

did you break your *** building your life to hand it over to beggars and people who refuse to work? You don't have to lie. If you feel obligated to give, do it through established channels. Tell people who beg for money that they can connect with it through those established channels. If you're really a bastard, soak the guy and light him on fire?

POST 16Original post

$2 really doesn't affect me. If there is a 1% chance that it might help someone, its probably a reasonable bet.....pot odds...

POST 18Original post

Made the cardinal error of handing over some moulah and then asking what has happened to them. The response was this almost incoherent rant about "being in prison and getting raped" . Me and my big socially concerned mouth!! I now just say no because although it might help short term, the problem is a broader societal problem. Some of them abuse me if I refuse as well.

POST 19Original post

Very true. Many of these people (the ones who aren't con artists) would rather pan handle than get help from social services. I feel for 'em, but I don't give money to any of them ever. I give to charity and donate tangible items but it ends there. Will work for food? Homeless vet? I don't get it. This country has some real problems and more people are leaving the middle class than entering it and the gap between the haves and have nots is widening by the minute. I say we force the oil companies to use some of their windfall profits to build better social services to help these folks.

POST 21Original post

living downtown and being asked for money 10-15 times daily.. one has to realize, that most all homeless people have resources for food, shelter, clothing due to the governmental system.. you are essentially paying for their "vices" whether it be meth, smokes, drinking, etc.. it's almost assured that 9/10 of the time you are paying for something they don't need.. it really gets on my nerves sometimes.. when i park my car outside the club.. either the sl55 or the porsche, i have some that just sit around my car waiting for me to come out.. and compliment my car, tell me it's their birthday.. and tell me they've been waiting all night to see me.. and if i can help em out for their birthday... i swear, it pisses me off sometimes... especially when they have 4 birthdays a month.. the way i look at it, is you aren't helping them out by giving them money, you are just making them remain stuck in the position they are in.. i mean, why don't they use that $10 they've panhandled, go to the salvation army, get some clothes, and get a job sweeping the streets, or at a temp agency.. giving them money is like buying an alky a round of drinks... if you are gonna help em out, the way i look at it, is offer them something that can help them get out of their current situation instead of feeding their nature to remain as they are... remember the saying about teaching a man to fish vs giving them the fish? my philosophy...

POST 22Original post

What is it with you Bob, your starting to make some sense

POST 23Original post

My favorite panhandlers are the ones that start off by saying "Now, I'm not asking you this because you drive a Porsche, but...." Ok, then why are you asking me and not the 100 other people on the street? The only panhandlers I give money to are the honest ones, i.e. the guys that have signs that say "Need money for beer" or something similar. I usually give them a couple of bucks. At least I know my money is going to a good cause.

POST 24Original post

What woke me up to the whole scene...20 years ago needed someone to help on a bottom job on my sailboat when I lived in Galveston. Spotted a guy wearing the "Will Work For Food Sign" next to the freeway. When I told him I would pay him $10.00 an hr and feed him, he just laughed and said he was doin just fine where he was.

POST 25Original post

it happens to me, but I'm the one usually panhandling.

POST 26Original post

It only happen when I drive my Yukon XL. My answer is always no.

POST 27Original post

Happened to me 2 weeks ago in Central FL. I was filling up in the early evening when a guy pulled next to me in a late model SUV and asked if we could trade cars for an hour. I laughed and said only if we trade payment books. He then offered to sell me 2 high end golf clubs. I explained I wasn't interested. He finally asked if he could have a few bucks to keep him from going to jail. When I refused he apologized and drove off. It did seem scripted, like this was a regular routine.

POST 28Original post

Reminds me of a time I was back in college and took a bus from NYC to DC. At the bus station panhandler asked me if I could spare a couple of bucks for food. I reached into my bag and gave him a subway sub bought just 5 minutes prior. He looked at me like I was crazy, yet thanked me and took the sandwich....go figure.

POST 29Original post

Reminds me of when I lived in the NYU dorms one summer. A panhandler asked me for money, and I offered him the rest of my pizza (it was half of a large pizza that was excellent). He snapped the box out of my hands, opened it, and said "mushrooms, gross" and proceeded to throw the pizza, box and all, over his head without looking into traffic. Nearly caused a wreck as the pieces hit several cars. I wanted to punch him. Then the event happened that convinced me never to give money to beggers ever again. Every day, there was the same guy setting in the entrance to Bleeker street station. Every morning, I gave him all of my change. One morning, after months of this routine, I didn't have a cent. I said sorry, and he proceeded to start cursing me and chasing me through the dark Bleeker street station. He was a really big guy. I wanted to hit him, but I didn't think I could explain to anyone why a guy in a suit beat up a homeless man. never again.
