Am having car in for the Euro suspension mod soon, will ask to have clutch checked/replaced at that time probably.

Turns out that the clutch was close to needing replacement and after it was changed the feel was very light, about the same as in my Audi.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I know about the "floor it in 4th gear" test, etc, but I am looking for a way like my old '88 944 had where you simply remove a 1" diameter rubber plug from the bell housing area and measure the position of metal piece in there to guess how worn the clutch was. Thanks to all for any hints in this area.

POST 2Original post

No inspection hole. Evidently, high pedal pressure and slippage are the only ways to diagnose a dying clutch. I have very high pedal pressure but no slippage...yet.

POST 3 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Am having car in for the Euro suspension mod soon, will ask to have clutch checked/replaced at that time probably. I too have what I'd call high pedal pressure...but that's a hard item to pin down...what's "high pedal pressure" for one person may be normal to another. As I'm owner #3 on this car it's impossible for me to know how the clutch pedal felt when the car was new. btw, I was born/raised in Avon, IN...I noticed you hail from central IN. I'm one of those strange so cal types now though, for the past decade or so Thanks for the response!

POST 4Original post

Kirk, With winter fast approaching, relocating to So Cal sounds appealing. Compared to my 996, the clutch pedals in my Audi S4 and 928 fall to the floor. I have also compared the effort to other 996's on my local dealer's lot...they were all easier, even the cars with higher mileage. A new Turbo S pedal felt like it wasn't connected to anything. This is why I believe I'll have to change the clutch the near future. If your's comes apart, I'd be interested to know what you find.

POST 5Original post

The clutch in my C2 was very heavy when I got it. I thought this was normal because the two I drove both felt like that. Turns out that the clutch was close to needing replacement and after it was changed the feel was very light, about the same as in my Audi. The change was so apparent that I brought the car back thinking they forgot to put something back together properly, but nope... that's how it's supposed to feel.
