Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

coolant tank replaced 1 yr ago, cap replaced 6 mo ago.
Leading evidence: 'Replace 1 yr ago, cap' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Clean radiators is always a good idea also' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

Suggestion
At 116K miles if original, I would proactively replace the water pump now.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

This morning on my way to grocery store, smelled something unusual and I looked on rear view mirror and saw a small vapor-like plume of smoke rising through the vents of the spoiler. Looked at the temp gauge and it seemed that it was hotter than usual for just being 2 miles from my house. decided to drive back home and call a flatbed. when I got home, the car was kind of hot, beyond the usual middle of the gauge, but no red blinking light, and the car was still running fine. towed to dealership and they have had it all day. they can't reproduce or see any leaks or loss of coolant pressure. they will call me later after they test again. fans are working. Outside ambient temp is actually cooler than yesterday in san diego (70). I thought initially that the water pump may be failing since its the original on a 116k mile'01 911. kind of perplexed. any clues from the forum? thanks
no drips, no leaks. coolant tank replaced 1 yr ago, cap replaced 6 mo ago. drove it home from dealer, they ran it for a while (17 miles). checked out fine. ran sort of hot on the way home, but then settled to normal temp at freeway speeds. outside temp 68.
Maybe the drains were semi clogged and opened up draining onto your hot engine? You could try sprinkling water on the back then lifting engine compartment lid to see if both sides are functioning. Should drain on both the high sides but the'll be lower when lifted. Possibly if one side leaks more water right after sprinkling the system then that side is clogged. You can see both the high and low holes for when shut or raised.
Not to place doubt on this but since you were looking at the plume via the rear view mirror are you positive it was coming from the engine bay an not from the exhaust and just drifting back up over the spoiler? When did this happen? when starting? while driving (how fast)? when parking?
As far as the temps running hot go, you might check to see how blocked the radiators might be.
Yes, the radiators look clean, it's garaged kept. It was a morning drive to get groceries. Two stoplights, a mile on the freeway and off again to a stoplight. That's where I saw the vapor rise. Engine temp was already beyond the usual which is what I also thought strange. Drove the same route this am and temp was much lower. It usual tales anotare 5 miles on that freeway before temo reaches normal oper temp. Wife thinks i am nuts. Ajes gota a Point .
it could be a faulty thermastat, not properely commincating with the radiator fans thus creating a higher coolant temprature and getting some coolant overflowing on the engine. It may be a stretch..
good luck
