FOund a great hack that allowed me to (once dealer turned on) I was able to cycle through the OBC functions......really only use 2 of them (temp and miles left to empty).

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

11 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I thought that I had read a post that said you could enable the on-board display(temp, avg. mpg, ect) on non-equipped cars via the computer. Is this correct? If so, how is it done? Also, how do you scroll through the functions without the extra stalk that comes on equipped cars? Thanks, Pat

POST 2Original post

If your temp is showing all of the time, then the computer is already on. If it is not already showing, the dealer can turn it on with a few keystrokes. To scroll, you need to either add a dash button or add the stalk. Check on RennTech for install instructions.

POST 3Original post

Don't you need an air temp sensor wire to the front bumper (stock location)? I wouldn't bother doing all this. It's not that important to get an onboard computer. For the effort, I'd get a touchscreen nav or bluetooth added instead that is actually useful.

POST 4Original post

Nick is right. The service tech at your dealer can activate it in seconds. The hardware already exists in the car and is easily enabled. How do I know? They did it for me.

POST 5Original post

My dealer turned mine on at delivery at my request (which he glady did). The cars already come with the temp sensor in place and the OBC is turned on only if the OBC package was purchased (different stalk). FOund a great hack that allowed me to (once dealer turned on) I was able to cycle through the OBC functions......really only use 2 of them (temp and miles left to empty). Had to do the hack to scroll to the miles left to empty sicne temp is already present when turned on.

POST 6Original post

The dealer just activated the temp readout for me. I did not realize that the full functionality of the on board computer was also activated. I wonder if i could just find the toggle switch that came with this option and install it myself?

Dell, You mentioned that you found a "great hack that allowed [you] to (once dealer turned on) I was able to cycle through the OBC functions......really only use 2 of them (temp and miles left to empty). Had to do the hack to scroll to the miles left to empty sicne temp is already present when turned on." Did your hack involve all the craziness with removing the gauges from the car and wiring a switch to the OBD? That seems like a mighty hassle and I hate the notion of taking things apart for fear of introducing even minor rattles. However, it would be awesome to have miles to empty and average mpg. Indeed, I have an extra switch above the convertible top button that could serve this function....clicking left to scroll and holding right to reset, for example. Then again, after seeing those pictures of the installation over at renntech or rennteam (can't remember which), I was more than a little ill. Cheers, Edward
