Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Looking for a SUV to join the family. Am down to two choices: X5 35d or Pepper S. Thanks

POST 2Original post

I am a big fan of diesel engines for light trucks. Too bad the US auto industry is late adopting it. X5 diesel has excellent torque and gas mileage. 3rd row seats is a great option. Pepper S probably handles better but guzzles fuel. Does Porsche offer 3 year and 50K maintenance warranty as well?

POST 3Original post

I think that's an easy one: if you're looking for the safe choice that gets great mileage, get the BMW. If you're looking for the fun choice and you don't mind a few potential reliability problems here and there, get the Porsche. Are you buying new?

POST 4Original post

I love diesels trucks... but I would drive both and see what you enjoy the and is most functional for your family. While I dont love the looks of the new Cayenne it is a pretty slick package. (Than again I never loved the looks of the old Cayenne )

POST 5 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

thanks guys. I actually got to do a BMW driving event that had a Pepper, X5, MB ML, Lexus, Volvo XC90 Turbo on an autocross course with a professional driver. (They take you through the line and then you repeat the line at full speed and full brakes). I got to drive all of them through the same course back to back. The Lexus was downright dangerous. The MB ML boring/safe, the Volvo was fun but plagued with understeer but very stable, the Pepper was great, but really the X5 held on, and was quicker through this course (which of course BMW designed). It had 20 inch wheels and sports suspension but still...I was impressed... But Pepper and X5 are pretty close. If there was a diesel Pepper maybe I'd buy it but at this point I think the X5 may be winning...Of course wife will have to weigh in - at breakfast though she mentioned that the Pepper looks like a duckboat to her.

POST 6Original post

X5. Was very disapointed by my Cayenne (base) loaner. X5 i tried was very capable and fun to drive. FM

POST 7Original post

If you're dead set on those 2 choices, then I pick the X5... But personally I think the only Cayenne worth buying is the Turbo. If you're gonna get a normal Cayenne or an S you might as well just get a Touraeg. As for the X5, now that there's an X6, the X5 just looks boring in comparison. If you add the Cayenne Turbo into your choices, then I'd pick that... If the Turbo is out of your budget, I would get a Jeep SRT8, it's an amazing SUV for the price & handles amazingly well for its size & weight. It's actually my second favorite SUV after the Cayenne Turbo. Check out how badass the SRT8 looks blacked out:

That would be the VW toureg diesel....

POST 9Original post

X5 all the way. The new pepper does look good but optioned like the bmw will probably cost 30% more. (I am biased though - Wifey is on her 3rd x5)

POST 10Original post

We have a Cayenne S and it has been great. It's one of the best cars we have ever owned, and I love driving it. When it comes time to replace it, we will most likely buy another Cayenne. Get the pepper!

POST 11Original post

What kind of response did you get on the Cayenne thread?

POST 12Original post

BMW is 4 years 50 thousand miles. go for the bmw there amazing SAV's

POST 13Original post

I went down the same path as you.... I went with the X5 diesel, I love the torque.... get the sport and auto hold, my fav options. idrive, though better that last year still a pain to use... the nav sucks and the consierge service is pretty good. emailing google maps to the car is a great feature as well... but found I dont use it as much as I thought. The mileage is the best feature, I get 510m per tank on 85% town driving. yeah.... I gotta loose the pumpkins.

Wow the wife really liked these cars years ago but fell in love witht the Q7 after finding out about the 3rd row. Now I'm in love with this one with 3rd row and diesel..... The neighbor two doors down has a X5 4.4 that looks really good! Almost as good as this one.

POST 15Original post

We have the X5 4.8is (not to be confused with the current X5 4.8i), which is the older body but with the N62 Double-VANOS motor from the newer models (750i, 550i, X5 4.8i). It has been solid (no creaks, drama, etc) and very fun to drive. When looking, we drove the RR HSE and Cayenne S. The RR HSE was heavy, bulky, yet solid...it wasn't nimble. The Cayenne S was similar and if I remember correctly, it has less cargo space than the X5. Our 4.8is has the four-corner air suspension, similar to the Cayenne S. Both might be problematic. Our suspension ECU was replaced under warranty; cost would have been $1,200. I can only imagine the newer X5's to be better, albeit heavier and larger. Ours is LeMans Blue like in these pics: http://www.google.com/images?q=x5%20...w=1227&bih=506

POST 16Original post

If you are going to consider the X5 Diesel, you may want to give the Touareg a look. I am on my second Touareg. The new 2011 Touareg is going to be out soon and the V6 TDI is a wonderful engine. I was considering a Cayenne Turbo, but came across a V10 Touareg and could not let it get away. The V10 TDI sounds like an orchestra playing. Just amazing. Not to mention the torque.

POST 17Original post

Some thoughts about diesel car ownership from a former owner: When refueling...... 1. Diesel fuel doesn't evaporate on the ground like gasoline does. If you're not careful, you'll get it on your shoes. 2. Not every gas station sells diesel. 3. Pump handles often have "diesel grime" on them, making your hands smelly from using self-service pumps. This makes carrying disposable (latex) gloves a good idea. The good things about diesel have already been said, insofar as torque, mileage, and range are concerned. Good luck with your decision.

POST 18Original post

35d all the way. We've had our 2011 35d for a month now and we love it. BMW is giving $4500 in credit and you will also qualify for the $1800 federal alternative fuel tax credit. And if you did the BMW Ultimate Drive, then I believe you qualify for an additional $1k in credit. The biggest downside is the Diesel Exhaust Fliud. The AdBlue is expensive from the dealer, but cheap at VW dealers and dirt cheap at truck stops. Every DEF fillup should last at least 10k miles, but that varies on driving conditions. Ours burn so clean that the exhaust tips are shiny and have no soot on them. We get a bit over 21mpg (as indicated by OBC) in mixed city and hwy driving, mostly city driving. As you already know, the torque is incredible. God, I love the smell of diesel in the morning! /m
