Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

I didn't own the car before the water pump was changed.

I dont think the transmission cables have been changed.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I just got a 99 996 and I'm getting used to it. It has been well taken care of but there is a whine to the engine when going 2-3K rpms, especially in lower gears, or maybe I just don't hear it as much at higher speeds.
Sounds like a tight belt, at least that's what I would have though on my 944.
How much "whine" is normal?
Could be something with the transmission (?). Do you know if your engine mounts have been upgraded to a stiffer style? I don't think the whine is from the motor.
Aside from tranny mounts as mentioned above, have your shifter cables been upgraded? GT3 cables lack the sound isolation grommets and transfer more of the transmission whine into the cabin which is A W E S O M E!
I dont think the transmission cables have been changed. But it sounds like the whine is coming from the engine, it follows the rpm and "whines" even without being in gear. Sounds like a tight belt or something. PO just had the water pump changed. Don't think the transmission mount has been changed.
It's pretty hard to diagnose a noise via text, but it sounds like you're hearing the normal noise of the engine. These engines do have a distinct noise to them.
Yeah I know it's a bit vague and hard to do via text. What I really wondered was if they have some "whine" to them naturally. And from your reply it does sound like they do. I guess the "whine" I hear is similiar to a tight belt or even fast reverse, but it's not coming from the transmission.
the car went through a PPI and nothing was noted and the same shop did the water pump a few days earlier, so I am sure all is good.
Just wanted to hear if this was considered "normal"
thanks
I didn't own the car before the water pump was changed. But I'll take it back up to the shop to double check.
If there are any 996 pros around Hollywood that could listen to it for a minute that would be much appreciated.
Have you tried taking off the serpentine belt and recheck? That will eliminate all the accesories and pulleys. A couple of minutes should be fine w/o water pump spinning.
