I opened the key head, took out battery, dried the inside, replaced battery with new one, and the key light started blinking again.

But your suggestion that it could be ordered to my key makes sense actually, will have to check with stealer.

I can replace the door handle molding with new one which comes with a key blade (another set comes with glove compartment key cylinder as well).

Does this mean that if I want only one key for door, ignition and glove compartment, I have to change all of them?

Well, I believe it can be replaced though you might have to buy some larger assembly to get it.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

So my wife walks on in my 3 year old son the other day and finds him dipping my car key in a cup of water like it was a tea bag
, he didnt get his cup of tea and my key stopped working.
I opened the key head, took out battery, dried the inside, replaced battery with new one, and the key light started blinking again. I had hope. When attempting to unlock car, nada. Manual mechanism was naturally working though. I figured as advised, maybe its a case or reprogramming key. I inserted key into door key chamber, turned it around, held down key head button for 5 seconds. But nothing. I tried to lock car manually, but the key now turned freely in the cylinder without locking or unlocking
After some research, one post advised that the link between cylinder and door lock mechanism may have disconnected. Out comes the tool box and after an hour of uninstalling door panel and other parts, I took out door handle molding which houses the key cylinder. Seems a part in the cylinder broke and no longer works.
Now I'm left with a car (1999 996 C2) that cannot be locked / unlocked.
I'm in a dilemma here. I can replace the door handle molding with new one which comes with a key blade (another set comes with glove compartment key cylinder as well). But I am still left with no key head, which also means I will need to buy a new one, and have two keys, one for door and another for switch.
Does this mean that if I want only one key for door, ignition and glove compartment, I have to change all of them? If so, I cant find a set that comes together. anyone know of one? or any other suggestions? Thanks.
If a key tumbler is broken this can be replaced. Well, I believe it can be replaced though you might have to buy some larger assembly to get it. That is I'm not sure the tumbler by itself is sold. You'll just have to find out at the parts counter.
I suspect you can order a tumbler that is set to accept the key blade you have. There are a limited number of different blade cuts/shapes. Or perhaps a locksmith can reset the tumbler to fit the key you have. (I did this years ago though not for a car key tumbler.)
Unless someone has more specific info I guess you'll have to visit your local Porsche dealer parts department and look over the shoulder of the parts clerk as he pages through the parts drawings to see if the key tumbler is listed as a separately available part and if it can be ordered pre-set to the key blade you have.
Hi Macster, you seem always to be the first to respond. Thanks.
From research I've done, seems the tumbler doesnt come alone but as part of a moulding the shape of the door handle. Though I could be mistaken. Did u do this on a 996? But your suggestion that it could be ordered to my key makes sense actually, will have to check with stealer. Thanks for suggestion, that resolves part of the problem and leaves me with 2 key blades since I only have 1 at the moment.
Quick update.... turns out Macster is right, I got intouch with a Porsche parts supplier online and they indicated they could order me a new lock matched to my current key. I'll keep you posted on how that goes, still waiting for details.
Quite early for him to teabag but hey gotta start sometime.
An update on the subject... the online reseller / parts supplier couldn't send me the lock for my car, and advised me that it can only be done through an official dealer. I've placed the order and waiting for it to be fulfilled.
