Glued it while waiting for Insurance to show up (the big 2012 storm) and they looked at it and sent me a check for like $3000.

The initial repair I made worked (and had for a year).

I know I can have it stitched or stitch it myself but for a 15 year-old car would just as soon replace the whole thing.

But many would say I should have just replaced the whole top and interior headliner.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

1999 Cabriolet with Plastic Window: Havre re-glued my separating plastic window once a few years ago and it is separating again. That's fine, have bought two more years on it. I know I can have it stitched or stitch it myself but for a 15 year-old car would just as soon replace the whole thing.
1. Is there a consensus on the best brand or top few brands I should buy?
2. Should I just get the glass window understanding it's a little smaller but won't have to polish out the haze of my plastic window?
I'm appreciative of the following answers so you can skip them:
A. Don't drive your Porsche in the rain
B. You can hear the engine better without the top down.
C. Take it to an upholstery shop and have them stitch it in and save new-top money
D. Do it yourself
E. What did you do to abuse a perfectly engineered German designed top and window?
F. Use Duct tape
I know I haven't scratched the surface of the sarcastic answers or those that aren't relevant to my questions in 1 or 2 but thought I would give you guys a heads up on me.
Did you say you were seeking a "consensus"? On a Porsche forum! Forgetaboutit.
Anyway, a couple of years ago I had a new plastic window sewn in because my OEM window was pulling away at the upper corners. That approach has worked for me. But many would say I should have just replaced the whole top and interior headliner. There is no consensus on this topic.

I think most would say use GAHH, but it's pricey and I don;t think you could tell the difference between that and another German A5 canvas.
Personally I had my installer use German A5 canvas and went with the plastic window $1,200 total with installation.
I had a tree limb fall through my back window a bit over a year ago. Glued it while waiting for Insurance to show up (the big 2012 storm) and they looked at it and sent me a check for like $3000. The glue held up until last week (so 13 months) where it started to come apart again. I REALLY have a problem with paying 2-3K just because of this so I just reglued it and clamped it up. SHould last another year although... I see these tops on ebay now.. not GAHH but they talk about German A5 and Hartz fabrics for about $500... tempting.
Would be nice to have someplace in the Northern VA area that would just do the plastic window... but the only recommended place will only do the entire top.
My vote would be to reglue it... use something like ShoeGoo for cars. That did it for me... a bit unattractive but my top is usually down anyway. All that matters to me at this time is that it doesn't leak.. and it doesn't.

BILL....My question.. why did you not spend the 3 grand you got from the Insurance on a completely NEW TOP with glass window and have done with the matter?
because my rear window was fine,.. all that the issue was was about a 6" area at the middle bottom where the plastic neatly separated from the canvas. The initial repair I made worked (and had for a year).
The real main issue to me though,.. is the inconvenience of having to drive up to Northern Virginia to drop my car off so that the work can be done during the week (no weekend work). I am in Saint Louis during the week. I'm only home during the weekend. The last thing I want to do after a week of working and travelling is get a ride/taxi to the shop and pick it up and struggle through Northern VA / DC traffic on a Friday to get home... after rescheduling my flight to different times/airports to get there before closing. In a nutshell?.. I'm lazy.

As I stated in the original post--I'm not going to re-glue or stitch in a new window. I spoke to a guy about a Gahh and it looks like with labor we're over $3k. Talked to another guy that with a cheaper top would be $1200. If an OEM top has lasted 14 years and I get seven years from a top less than half the cost I'm way farther ahead. Those that have seen my previous posts know I'm not a "buy the best" guy. I'm an ROI guy.
