The service advisor told me that because the aftermarket glass is thinner and lighter, it doesn't set as well and often they have to be replaced with Porsche glass at the dealer.

Suggestion
It won't be a porsche dealer, but you can specify they use original parts.

Suggestion
I knew that I could do that, but I didn't realize that I could specify that they use Porsche glass and parts.

State Farm told me they have glass installer who comes to your house or work, but I blew it off assuming that they would likely use some sort of aftermarket cheapie windshield that would end up squeaking over bumps.
These are separate views of the same evidence. Frequency alone does not establish a fix, and these counts must not be added together.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Well, there was never going to be a convenient time for it to happen but, it happened.
Car was sitting in the sun all day (probably close to 100f), and I decided it would be prudent to hose off all the bug splatter from the night before (before it baked on really good). Everything went well, as far as the bumper was concerned... A couple seconds after the hose was turned on the windshield *pop* it cracked in two, right down the middle!
Appointment next week at the dealer. $766 for the glass, $250 to install (plus new rubber bits). There are two options: Completely clear, or with a green top tint. My car came with the completely clear windshield, so I ordered that one.
I also ordered ClearPlex Windshield Protection from Precision Auto so that the new windshield stays looking-new forever.
I'm not sure if this is applicable in Canada, but in some states the replacement of a windshield is covered as zero deductible insurance claim. Since driving around with pitted or cracked windshields is a safety issue, they make it as easy as possible for people to replace them. I'd suggest you contact your insurer and see if there is any coverage.

Free windshield replacement ($0 deductible) in AZ with Farmer's Insurance. Replaced mine last year after a rock from a truck hit me on the Hwy. OEM too.
Florida = mandatory that insurance covers full cost of windshield.
Mine is pitted and scratched from PO and driving out west so I can't wait for a rock to take mine out
I got hit last year in the driver side corner. The crack started up and then made a u turn, so it is small. Still, need to replace. I may wait until September to get'r done. Won't be doing any concoursing until then..
I've been driving around with two HUGE spanwise cracks that emanate from the upper left of the windshield to a double pointed rock hit directly through my line of sight and then all the way to the lower right corner. It's bad. It happened about two months ago but I just haven't had time to drop it at the Porsche dealer.
State Farm here in California will cover it for the deductible of $250. I'll probably get that done in a couple of weeks.
450, you know they have mobile services that will handle this for you right? They'll come out and replace it in your parking lot in a couple of hours. It won't be a porsche dealer, but you can specify they use original parts. I'd rather have glass professionals handle it than the dealer.

Not true. Surprisingly there is aftermarket glass for 996s, and it's not very good. I had mine replaced at the dealer who subs it out to a glass shop that comes to the dealer. The service advisor told me that because the aftermarket glass is thinner and lighter, it doesn't set as well and often they have to be replaced with Porsche glass at the dealer. Mine cost around $1100 with labor.
