The PPI can check the engine and running parts, you can check everything else.

Looks nice and a very clean engine but on the other hand it had recently been detailed.

Nada is saying $27,250 for a clean retail and $23,500 for a clean trade.

Got the PPI done and mechanically was strong except for a bunch of minor items (door latches, window regulators, new key, windshield cowl, hood latch, drivers seat leather repair).
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Local non-Porsche dealer is listing a 2002 black/grey 996 convertible with 52,240 miles and has a manual transmission. They're asking $29,999. Nada is saying $27,250 for a clean retail and $23,500 for a clean trade.
At the moment, I do not know anything about its service history, what's been done to it. Were I to go forward, I would do a PPI by a local independent Porsche specialist. What are people's thoughts on the pricing?
That's my sentiment too. I'm in the Pacific Northwest. I will probably wait until the end of summer before seriously looking to buy. Trying to get a feel for the market at the moment.
Thanks for the replies.
I took a quick look at it this afternoon. Looks nice and a very clean engine but on the other hand it had recently been detailed. However, there's no history other than Carfax. Interestingly an Autonation dealer across the street also had a slightly older one with the 3.4 and it apparently went for their asking price which was high (but then they would say that...)
I suspect that it might be worth waiting until the end of the convertible season up here before seriously shopping for one...
Yeh the asking price looks about right to me. Think of it this way. What ever the asking price, the seller always has a rock bottom price that he would accept and when throwing around figures in the 20-30 thousand dollar bracket its about 2-3000 dollars. That's a fact. If you can pick out things against the car, then the price is negotiable. If not and its the car you want, that's what you have to pay. BTW when you are seriously looking to buy, read everything there is to know about the model and year of the car you want. Make sure that it does everything that you read about. The PPI can check the engine and running parts, you can check everything else. Doors windows, alarm, cab top, trunk, engine lid, lights, park lights, gas door, and the list goes on.. Good luck when the time comes to buy.
I paid 24.4 in Jan for an 02 cab w/85k but it also had new front brakes, battery, clutch, ims, rms, water pump and service history. It also came with a car cover, windscreen, and one for the windshield.
I did replace the top as it was 11 years old and put new tires on it. Great car and we just put 1500 miles on it a couple weeks ago.
I probably paid a thousand or two more than necessary but i'm happy with my purchase.
I was thinking on the lines that the car has a hard top as well as the soft top. I think (but not sure) that all cabs left Stuttgart Germany with a hard top. A matching hard top is another $1000 approx. if it had to be replaced used. The old saying is, "when the top comes down the price goes up" lol. A lot of these cabs loose their hard top along the way. 2 years ago I paid $27000 for a 99 job with matching hard top. Great for the winter months and that's the reason why I thought that the price looked fair but can be negotiable if the hard top is missing. BTW I think your price was very fair when looking at what I paid but mine only had 45000miles on the clock which is a large plus factor in the dealing. . .
Do I see a Boxster in your avatar? If that's the car you are talking about then things change drastically financially. I see you are in Harrisburg. I am in Ephrata. We should have a coffee get together one weekend. I often go to my mother in laws in Enola. IN fact we were there last weekend and my wife is actually there right now. Does the name MAUER ring any bells.
I picked up my first Porsche a couple months ago, a 2002 Targa with 77k miles for $19k, felt like a steal since most of them seem to be going in the $25-27k range. Got the PPI done and mechanically was strong except for a bunch of minor items (door latches, window regulators, new key, windshield cowl, hood latch, drivers seat leather repair). Got everything fixed up, man those repairs added up quickly, ended up about $22k into the car.
Took a bit of a risk since it didn't come with a service history, I'm hoping it won't be too much trouble from here on out. My main concern is the IMS, I hate to replace it by itself, but will definitely do it if I'm in there for clutch or transmission work. Wish I knew if/when the clutch was replaced already.
Thanks for all the great info.
I had a good long chat with a local independent Porsche shop (who I would have do the PPI on anything local that I consider.) They echoed most of what I've picked up by reading the posts here. Got some idea from them on repair and replacement of various items, which of course are good bargaining chips, specifically the water pump, clutch and IMS. Seems like you get close to $5k pretty quickly with all of that and I'm guessing that with an unknown service history I'd be looking at all of those sooner rather than later. All this makes the higher prices from private sellers with full service histories and those listed here more appealing.
@Hurdigurdiman - regarding the hard tops, I seem to remember reading somewhere that they became optional in 2002(?). Even before that, they could be deleted and the purchaser "given some money back."
+1, and as CJWessing mentioned, he purchased a great car for $19K, but it came with ALOT of unknowns. Quite a gamble if all you have is $19-20k to spend and then you get hit with a $5K repair bill when problems arise.
Seems you have a good indi to get plenty of questions answered, so get a thorough inspection, test drive, DME readout and negotiate from there.
A few RL'rs have their 996 for sale here often and they are usually quite solid on history. Check locally in your area for private sales, there are usually some good ones to be found.
If you have interest in OEM turbo look, PSE and extensive service history, I have my 996 cab listed:

PM me any questions. Willing to drop off at terminal or drive it up to you.
I don't think you would have a problem selling yours at $28000. I don't think the upgrades add anything to a 996 UNLESS the buyer is looking particularly for those particular mod upgrades. Where you get the figure of $6000 for brakes all round I can't figure. So come back to your rock bottom acceptance price and it will sell fast as it is a very nice looking and well cared for vehicle.
