Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Which, I imagine, lends credence to the suggestion that the problem is a loose wire.

So, pull the instrument cluster and check the wiring behind?

Is there a way to replace a tach without replacing the whole instrument cluster?

Coverage and how to read this overview
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.
13 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

1 acknowledgements have no verified action link; they do not establish a repair result.
Just after starting the car and pulling away (on an extremely hot day if that matters) a bunch of warning lights came on at once, including one in the middle screen that says "failure indicator" and shows an engine image. That last one was pretty disconcerting!
Also, the check engine light is on, the redline light on the tach, and a few others. These lights stay on as long as the car is running. The failure indicator message can be made to go away with the lower left-hand control stalk.
The tach is dead as a doorknob, but every other instrument seems to be working fine (speedo, gas gauge, temp gauge, etc.). The engine seems to be purring along fine.
Any thoughts on how to approach this? Is there a way to replace a tach without replacing the whole instrument cluster? Does this suggest a broader problem, or is my tach just fried?
I would appreciate any wisdom the forum has to share!
Pat
At this point the tach would be the least of my concerns. One of two things is happening -- some type of electrical gremlin that is throwing all of the lights and codes, may be a pain in the *** to chase down, but nothing horrible overall. Two, some type of significant engine issue. Pull the codes, see what the issues are and report back. Or flat bed to your indy/dealer so they can take a look at it if you are not able.
Good luck, report back, hopefully it's just a gremlin/short.
The same way it relates to the AC working sometimes and not other times when the switch fails. It doesn't make proper contact, thus some of the electrical components fail, and sometimes they don't. One way to check is to start car, and turn the key to the right "gently" as far as it will go, which should initiate proper contact. Doesn't sound like a switch failure, but worth the try.
Strange development yesterday... the car went back to normal. Tach works, no warning lights.
Which, I imagine, lends credence to the suggestion that the problem is a loose wire.
