Ok this my bad, it is not at a porsche dealer, but this a very high rated used car dealer.

I do not like to remove used plugs and then reinstall them.

If you have one of those handy, I recommend letting them do the talking.

If the dealer finds nothing/does nothing and just resets the light, maybe I'd be a bit less enthused, but if they get errors indicating the issue, some known standard maintenance repair (eg: ignition errors, they replace all the coil packs/plugs), then that wouldn't push me off the car at all.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

And you know some dealers will say they fixed it when all it did is dry out.
First off hello to all,
I just found this site not very long ago as i was looking for info on 996's. I have been looking for the past few months for my first P-car.
I have found one that has gotten my attention, it is a 04 c2 6speed black on black with 50k miles, they(dealer) say they have the service records for the car.
I went to drive it today, but when i was listening to it it sounded like something was off, then i saw it had a check eng. light.
They pulled it into one of there bay's and pulled the code and told me it had a miss on #one cylinder but there mech. Won't be in until monday. Yes it was raining this morning don't know if that helps. So what i guess i am asking is should i just walk away from this one already or give it a chance and get a ppi on it. Any and all advice wil be helpful.
Thanks jeff
everything is negotiable, but I just bought my first p-car too and man alive I wouldn't want to touch a car that worried me AT ALL for my first new-engine'll-cost-you-$15k-mobile. It will be interesting to see what their mechanic comes back with, but my $.02 says if a deal isn't perfect, walk. They made lots of them and it may take several months but the right car will appear if you keep looking. Far better to be patient on the front end and land in a car you love than rush into a mistake that ruins your appetite forever. You're not even under any obligation to be rational with your concerns. Feel warm and fuzzy or no deal.
good luck and welcome!
Be careful. This is just my opinion but when a dealer offers a car for sale BEFORE they have thoroughly checked it out and made it right, it is huge concern for me. I have walked away on many cars because of this. I don't buy the line that "we will make it right". I think it should be "right" before it is offered for sale.
As others have mentioned, be patient. A friend of mine has been searching for a 996TT for over a year and I think he agrees that when the car that is right for him presents itself, he will know it.
Bet of luck, enjoy the hunt, it can be half the fun.
Well from what I have been reading, it does sound like it could be a cracked coil. But i have a feeling that they will leave it inside rest of the weekend so it will dry out and they might not catch it. And you know some dealers will say they fixed it when all it did is dry out.
I agree with Invius. Take your time and look elsewhere. If black on black is the color combo you are looking for it should not be too challenging to find another MKII with similar mileage.
Regardless of what you decide just be sure to get a thorough PPI done.
I'm not saying it's a catastrophic issue, but my point is more what Silo mentioned. If a dealer is selling a car, they should have done everything in their power to make the car in good condition to sell it. This has not been done in this case, which would immediately give me credibility concerns with this dealership, at least with their sales department. As many before me have said before, when you buy these cars, you buy the car, and the previous owner/seller. I would have a hard time buying this seller. Again, OP isn't buying an all original 356 which are few and far between, one of the great things and bad things about the 996 is that there are lots of them. Happy Hunting.
Wait and see what the dealer says... And then insist on a separate shop conducting a thorough PPI. If they resist, move on.
Porsche dealers are usually honest. Their volume is too low to get a shady reputation.
Good luck with your search.
Do the service records indicate the car was well taken care of? Loved maybe?
What is the overall condition of the car?
A misfire after driving in the rain is not the end of the world. I've had my otherwise fine Turbo misfire twice, once after sitting outside in the rain all night and another time after sitting outside in a bad fog.
Do the records show the plugs were changed or if changed are due to be changed again? If so and if the car checks out ok have new plugs and new coils installed as condition of you buying the car after, and this is important, after you again test drive the car after the plug/coil job to ensure the misfire is still not present.
If the plugs are not due to be changed I'd still insist they be changed along with the coils. I do not like to remove used plugs and then reinstall them. This can lead to the plugs seizing if the car is driven in bad weather.
Ok this my bad, it is not at a porsche dealer, but this a very high rated used car dealer. They deal in old muscle cars to new and lots of high end cars too. I should of made that clear earlier. I know pictures don't say much but if any would like to look at it. I can give the web site where it is. Thanks again
Jeff
I would look elsewhere....why take a risk. There are plenty of cars on the market. My preference is to buy in a private sale after a PPI, and a car that has been well looked after. If you want a CPO, a dealer will have more options.
Lots of advice to walk away, and I agree that there are enough decent 996's out there that it doesn't make sense to chase bad cars.
But IMHO the car you describe (2004 996 C2 M6 50K miles) is
right
year,
right
model,
right
mileage, and in a good color. So assuming it's in great condition and a good price, I'd at least play out the hand and see what happens.
If the dealer finds nothing/does nothing and just resets the light, maybe I'd be a bit less enthused, but if they get errors indicating the issue, some known standard maintenance repair (eg: ignition errors, they replace all the coil packs/plugs), then that wouldn't push me off the car at all.
Well thanks for all the input everybody.
I will be going up after work tomorrow and see what they have to say.
I understand this is not like my present car, lexus is300. I bought it off lease turn in with all records, and it has been a great car for the last 6yrs.
And now I think this would be a great upgrade for me.maybe not this 996 but a 996 it will be.
Jeff
Not much the dealer could have done to diagnose a bad coil before it had any symptoms. Let us know what they say. If it's local and you want another opinion on it, let me know.
So if I understand it correctly, and assuming it's a coil, there's no indication that the car has been poorly maintained, nor that the dealer failed to prepare the car correctly, nor that there is any likelihood of any more issues once the coil is replaced?
Well, my opinion is that coils go bad, and it's no indication of poor maintenance. Assuming this is a coil that's the problem and not low compression or something of that nature, replacing the coil should be fine. I would, however recommend replacing all of the coils (and spark plugs if they're due), and not just #1.
Update, ok i did get to drive the car tonight. All i can say is WOW. Now i understand the love for these cars even more. They said it was cause of the water, but all i can figure is they let it dry out, nothing about replacing a coil or anything. Nothing about service history. Sales man was not that sharp on the car. I did smell coolant after the drive too. Very pretty car too. But i'll keep looking. One thing funny one salesman asked did you keep it under a hundred. Honestly i did, only got to 94.
And they are set on there price $31,995, i know thats too much.
Jeff
Well it definitely seems worth a ppi, but I'd go ahead and get the full monty on that. I just bought mine last month for $29.9k after my wife haggled the dealer down from their $32k asking price in her epic, diamond earring-winning 5-hour role as the disinterested spouse buying her stupid husband a ridiculous car she didn't really want while I took the kids to a birthday party. If you have one of those handy, I recommend letting them do the talking. It's hard to negotiate with dialated pupils and a car-on.
If it was just a coil going bad i wouldn't mind, but they had no service history on it, so i will pass and keep looking. I would rather wait to find the correct one instead of just buying the first one i drive.
