Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

My 99 C2 started making a fluttering sound when first started. Almost sounds like a stick in a fan. Car has 111,000 miles. Lasts for a second at most. Any idea what causes this? It only does it if the car has been sitting for a while. Does it first thing in the morning. Thanks mike

POST 2Original post

My car makes a similar sound I think. I'm thinking the tappets (lifters) are making noise until oil reaches them. The noise disappears in 20 seconds or so. I'm hoping its somewhat normal. Does your sound change with revving the engine?

POST 3Original post

Best bet is to post a video (or at least audio) of the car starting up. "Fluttering" doesn't really give us enough to go on. "Stick in a fan" that goes away in less than a second sounds like chain slap. As for trapper, if it sounds like lifters ... it's probably lifters.

POST 4 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

What causes chain slap? It's literally a second or less. No chance to even rev it. Mike

The chain tensioners aren't quite getting the job done so there is a little bit of slack in the chains prior to hydraulic pressure charging up. What your hearing is the sound of one or both chains touching the chain guides. It sounds quite like a bicycle chain slapping the guard rail and is considered perfectly normal on higher milage examples.
