One car that had its engine cleaned frequently -- kept having oil leaks and then experienced a failed intake manifold which sprayed hot coolant all over the engine and engine compartment developed a phantom camshaft position sensor error that was cured when I finally dug down to the sensor's connector and disconnected it and reconnected it to remove the surface corrosion.

Suggestion

I ignored the symptom for awhile and it appears to have fixed itself though when the car was hit in the back (5mph impact) the shop probably removed the spoiler to check for sheet metal damage and when it did this the shop tech disconnected and reconnnected the connectors.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

SF Bay Area Folks, Does anyone have any experience with South City Car Wash ? And anything to look out for? Such as covering the alternator or any other sensitive electronics? I'm looking to get the engine top/bottom cleaned and apparently this is one of the only places that can do it since there are laws against it in the city. I know OrientExpress has a DIY on engine cleaning, but mine is beyond anything I can do myself at 85k miles. Any advice appreciated.

POST 2Original post

I know you dont wanna do it when the motor is hot

Your car and you can do as you wish, but my advice is unless you are preparing to work on the engine best to leave it alone. The washing water will introduce moisture into the various electrical connections and there are alot in the engine compartment. This can lead to all sorts of goofy problems. My 02 Boxster developed a problem with the spoiler not going down at slow speed and not working with the switch shortly after I washed the engine. I ignored the symptom for awhile and it appears to have fixed itself though when the car was hit in the back (5mph impact) the shop probably removed the spoiler to check for sheet metal damage and when it did this the shop tech disconnected and reconnnected the connectors. Sincerely, Macster.

POST 4 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Interesting, many thanks for the input. I was curious about whether I should leave it alone or not. I guess that answers the question.
