Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

The dealer installed a rebuilt starter under warranty almost 2 years ago.

In addition, I had the plugs and coils replaced about 13K miles ago.

Suggestion
I will park to run into a store for a minute or two and when I come out she won't start; dash lights come on and it does a half-hearted attempt at cranking but then nothing.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I filled up at my usual station and (with highs in the chilly 105's as opposed to the 115's) all is good now.
I love the sound of my 03 996 firing up in the garage. Its almost explosive! However, three times in the last week, I have started my car and it starts with a whimper and the idle only gets to maybe 500RPM's. After a few seconds, it will climb to 1100 and then after a minute or two, settle at 750-800RPMS (as usual). Once it almost stalled but when I gave it a little gas, it bounced back.
This only happens in the morning. The dealer installed a rebuilt starter under warranty almost 2 years ago. I have a new ignition housing including the switch. In addition, I had the plugs and coils replaced about 13K miles ago. No CEL and otherwise, runs great.
Thoughts? Thanks!
Either a bad tank of gas or the triple digit temps were taxing the battery. I filled up at my usual station and (with highs in the chilly 105's as opposed to the 115's) all is good now. Thanks for your suggestions!
^This.
Or the intake air temperature which is a function of the MAF.
The OP will need an OBD2 code reader/data viewer to view the readings in real time at engine start and after and compare to ambient temperature.
But the behavior does suggest a mixture mix up. As long as the rebuilt starter spins the engine fast enough once the engine catches and runs the starter is out of the picture.
Not sure if this is worthy of its own thread -- I am having the opposite trouble. I will park to run into a store for a minute or two and when I come out she won't start; dash lights come on and it does a half-hearted attempt at cranking but then nothing. Pull the key out and wait a few seconds and then it sometimes starts sometimes doesn't.
Best is to start your own thread to get ppl focused.
Please tell us if it also happens when the engine is cold. If it feels like the starter is struggling (i.e., spinning slower than usual), then it could be the battery or the starter. If you mean it cranks at normal speed but just will not fire up, that's something else.
