This is not a probability of success.

Suggestion

If they have the same mounting points and hoses, I don't see why you couldn't run either one.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

7 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

0 evidence records excluded for query context · 0 excluded by outcome qualification · 0 adjusted by outcome qualification.

0 acknowledgements have no verified action link; they do not establish a repair result.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Has anyone retrofitted a generation 2 coolant tank into a generation 1 car? Is there a reason NOT to do this? The gen 2 tanks cost much less. Thx.

I don't think so since their shapes are different and they cannot be interchanged as far as I know. I'm sure others can chime in. BTW, have you tried Sunset to get parts?

POST 3Original post

I got my gen 1 tank at Suncoast for $206. a couple of years ago.

Called Sunset today. $271 for 1998, 1999, 2000 MY (1st Generation 996) $118 for 2001, 2001, 2003, 2004 MY (2nd Generation 996) If I wasn't so desperate to have this car running by the weekend, I'd buy the the 2nd generation tank, and make the sucker fit! My indy beat up his supplier and quoted me $200 for the tank. I'm calling him tomorrow to order it. I will be buying this plastic welder from Harbour Freight. I'm going to experiment with welding this polyethylene piece of @$#!. And this time, I'll be pushing 120+ psi into the POS, to assure there isn't a leak! This is a good read about welding thermoplastics: http://www.kingplastic.com/tips-for-...hermoplastics/ I hereby vow, after tomorrow, to never to buy another generation 1 coolant overflow tank.

POST 5Original post

If they have the same mounting points and hoses, I don't see why you couldn't run either one. Pics of the differences?

Wow, that's quite a bit more than the gen 2 tanks. I can see why you feel ripped off. A new one should last a long time though so don't feel too bad.
