Coverage and how to read this overview
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hi All,
I have been lurking on this forum and a few others (996TT & 964) for a few months in anticipation of buying my first Porsche. I have always admired them and decided it is time to buy one.
Looking into them I was torn by a few models:
996: Liked the performance for price, but was a little concerned by the horror stories and in some angles wasnt convinced by the early styling.
964: Love the look of them, but in reality that are a 20yr old car and as a general driver and occasional track car I wasnt sure this was the right way to go.
996TT: crazy performance for the price, but didnt really like the idea of a 4WD 911 (I am sure they are great to drive), and is a TT just overkill and over priced vs a 996?
997: Love the look but struggle to justify the price as this is a second car?
I read Total 911, and the more I read the more I likes the sound of the std 996 C2, they seem to be real fans of the car, so I took a few test drives of 996 C2s and a 997 C2 & PDK, differing ends of the price spectrum but after driving them it really dawned on me that the 997 whilst having nicer elemenst wasnt worth the extra money.
On further trawling I started to like the look of the 40th Anniversary models (except for the silver paint and bling wheels), it had pretty much everything I was looking for (just wish they were Seal Grey), 345hp, LSD, revised suspension, which would be great on the track, and a nice interior, PSM etc as std.
So to cut a long story slightly shorter, I went for a 40th. And I collect it on Wednesday, its a 37k mile car in beautiful condition, PPI showed it needed tires, brakes and its on the original clutch, dealer agreed to replacing all the brakes and trimmed the price for the tires. Its a CPO and is under warranty until July, it has full service records and all looks good. No record of RMS or IMS work but also no leaks around the engine and no sign of metal in the filter found at the PPI.
So I am looking forward to the Wednesday and Thursday trip home to the Midwest from Florida ~1,900 miles!!, should be a great road trip to get to know the car and I am planning to stay over on the first night in Robbinsville NC to drive the Tail of the Dragon first thing Thursday morning so that I can cross that off my bucket list .
I will try to remember to get out of the car every now and then and take some pics of the trip and post them next week.
Plans for the car:
Full service (it hasnt been used much in the last 12 months)
New wheels & tires (keeping 18s on as I think 19s will be hard work), any tire recommendations??
 Lots of cleaning and polishing
A few DEs or track days
Red calipers (to complement the new black wheels I am planning)
Maybe lowering the suspension (depends how harsh the std setup feels on the roads around here)
And induction and or exhaust kit, I wanted one with the Sports exhaust but this is std, Id like a fruitier sound and maybe some extra HP but I want it to be comfortable to drive and not deafen me or the neighbors!
And some sort of Iphone integration to play my tunes
Congrats! The road trip should be very enjoyable. get the car washed along the way and definitely post up some pics.
Looks like there was a Pre-purchase mod bug going on during the purchase process.
Instead of just sending you to search under all the above mentioned mods.
1. keep the 18's; Sumitomo HTRZ III, Hankook V12 Evo for a very good price for a good tire, you can also consider, Continental, Michelin, Bridgestone, Pirelli as costlier replacements.
2. Wheels; the Victor line of wheels; Zehn, Innsbruck, etc. Wheel Enhancements.com has ALOT of
wheel options and you could possibly work a deal on wheel/tire combo with just about any reputable
shop.
Do you plan on keeping the stock polished wheels? If you have the storage space, IMO, keep them if the time ever comes to resell the car.
3. I personally have never tried Zaino, but there are plenty of quality products available ( Griot's, Adam's, etc.). There are some very helpful hints
on cleaning the exterior, interior and general detailing ; i.e.. consider a lightweight household leafblower for drying your car after a wash, one of
the best cleaning tips I have adopted.
4. the 4th AE comes with the X-51 package, which get's plenty of complements. I would suggest you
search for Fister D's; awesome sound, no drone, great price.
5. You could look into the EVOMS CAI, IMO, definitely lets the engine breathe better.
6. Iphone, Ipad, Ipod integration: Dension 500. There are other manufacturers of similar components;
another RL member has the Dension 500 in the Parts Marketplace.
7. Suspension, not sure, but I think the 40thAE comes with the X-74 suspension, which is a great set-up. If roads and general driving surfaces in your area allow you to lower your car further, then look into H&R lowering
springs, Bilstein PSS9 or 10, among other reputable aftermarket Porsche
suspension manufacturers.
IMO, you may want to consider joining RL as a Paid member to give you additional access to the Member Classifieds Section; there are usually
some great OEM and Mod items available for sale at great prices; i.e. wheels, tires, suspension, intake, exhaust, etc.
Where in the midwest are you from?
Have fun on the trip and remember to try and get some sleep somewhere along the line because all you will want to do is keep on driving!
That is sure going to be a nice ride. bring some good tunes or at least go to a reputable radio shop to integrate your Iphone or MP3 player to play your favorites. If you have an Ipad, I would suggest you bring it for some enjoyment factor ( and pics) during rest stops along the way.
Check the fluids/ tire PSI during pit stops. I drove less than half the miles you're driving after purchasing my Turbo in NC, and it sure was enjoyable.
Congratulations. Looks like you thoughtfully researched the issue, bought what was right for you as well as got the most for your dollar. Perfect.
My personal choice is that I don't try to save money on tires. I try to buy high-quality, N-rated tires I think will perform well -- and have never been disappointed. Have used the Michelin Sport Pilots. Perform well. Wear well. Biggest issue is they tend to get noisy over time and as they wear...but this is influenced a lot by the roads you drive on.
I think a C2 is an excellent choice--even more so with the features that come on the 40th Anniv.
Good luck. Hope it all works out well and you have a great ride home.
Welcome! I just bought my first P-car 2 weeks ago. Smile is still on my face. I look for excuses to drive.
Yesterday, I picked up a friend at the CalTrans station in San Francisco. We ate lunch, and I was going to drive him back to the train station. I asked, "Where do you live?". His response, "San Mateo." (28 mins away). Of course I drove him to his house...
You're gonna love it!
got back at 12.10am this morning, 1,950 miles in 39 hrs - that included eating and sleeping
Blue ridge was awesome, last 750 miles were boring!
I'll post some pics and a brief report the weekend.
Car is something else!!
