From the pics I have of a 996 engine torn down the oil level appears to be below the IMS. But why bother worrying about this? Just drain the oil into a clean drain pan, cover it (with foil) and set it aside out of the way. When you're ready, you can reuse the oil. Sincerely, Macster.
