George, If you want to just replace the shock and keep the current ride then just get a set of replacement shocks for the rear.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I have a 1999 996 C2 Cab a rear strut slowly leaking hydraulic fluid. The vehicle has 78miles and I use it as a daily driver but plan on attending 4 DEs a year.
I plan on keeping the car for a long time as my second, but favored car, but it will always be more of a daily driver.
What are my options?
- Should I just replace the rear struts with a direct stock replacement?
- Should I replace fronts and backs with an upgraded system? How "upgraded" do I really need?
I've never had any experience with suspensions. If I change struts in the rear, do a have to change ones in the front?
thanks!
George
Several folks have said that the standard struts in the 996 are soft and do not last. I have a PSS9 system and I love it... for the adjustable ride and for the adjustable height. But if you want to save money and do not care about ride height - you can just go Bilstein struts - they will last the rest of the cars lifetime.
George, If you want to just replace the shock and keep the current ride then just get a set of replacement shocks for the rear. Or if you wish I have a clients set of PSS10's that we can fix you up with...
George,
If I where you I would jump on that PS10 offer. a Slightly used set of PS9s transformed my C4 and saved me $$$ If you want to do DE you want these PSS10's.
George, are you experienced on the track? If not, you will probably find the OEM suspension more progressive and easier to learn from.
Switching to PSS9/10 , ROW, etc., suspension components will certainly improve the handling of your car, however you may not be ready for that advancement on the track. If you are a novice, the OEM(stock) suspension will give you greater feedback, IMHO, and thus speed your learning process.
You can send the OEM parts back to Bilsteins for a rebuild. Should be around $100 per corner. If you want to upgrade there are a number of good options as well.

go for ROW 030... the only kit that comes with shocks, bump stops, new sway bars and springs that lower your car less than 1/2 and inch and makes a world of difference on the track as well as day to day driving (not low enough to scrape) .... it's the best bang for the buck out there... I have it... it was a good move...
at 78K miles I would assume your existing shocks have seen their best days behind them.... if you replace one shock it will be more efficient than the others with all that mileage and it may introduce irregularities... do the whole job and forget about it for the next 10 years... I think you can ROW030 kit for $1K
Thanks everyone! I'm a quite a bit less confused regarding my options and since this is daily driver M030 or direct replacement might be my best options. I think the PSS9/PSS10 might be more than my skillset, or body during daily drives, is made for. I'll keep those in mind when I get my coupe racer.
PSS9/PSS10 is good stuff but for the $$ you can't beat ROW 030... there *is* difference between M030 and ROW030... I would get ROW 030 as this has been discussed many times on these forums... Gert @ Carnewal or Suncoast can get it for you....
Big +1 I just got the ROW M030 suspension from Suncoast. For right around $1100 shipped, there just isn't a better option at that price point. All factory new shocks/struts, springs, sway bars, bushings and bump stops to make your car ride like it should have from the factory. Can't wait to get the US/Canada
M032 suspension out of my car. It's been in the car for 50,000 miles and 9 years. I think the change will be dramatic.
C4S had a good setup right out of the box... I have a friend with C4S and all he did is put on H&R lowering springs and it really handles! no need to upgrade that suspension.. unless it's getting old
C4S suspension was much better than stock C2 suspension...
