The sunroof had stopped working, which turned out to be a loose fuse.
Leading evidence: 'loose fuse' (1 discussions report identifying this cause; no attributable repair resolution). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'loose fuse' (1 discussions; 1 report identifying it and 0 suggest it). The most frequently discussed action is 'Clean especially compared' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

He doesn't suspect the linkage, but possibly the second gear syncro.

I would think they're probably the same, and I already have a kit in hand

I know what you mean about a black 911, they are tough to keep clean especially compared to silver.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Just brought her home. My 996 was an 03 C2 Coupe that I bought 2 years ago as CPO car from a dealer in Denver. Yes, I bought it right before the bottom fell out of the market. It was in very nice shape, but a black car is tough to keep clean. The CPO warranty was scheduled to end next month, and the car was due for it's 30k service in a thousand miles or so. New rear tires probably weren't far behind. Looking at the $$ that the car would need to keep it in the right condition, and the potential $$ for an aftermarket warranty, I decided to step up to something a bit newer.
Apologies for the cell phone pics, but it was pretty dark when I got home this evening. She is a CPO 2006 C2 Coupe 6sp manual, silver on black with 17.5k miles. It has Nav, Bi-Xenons, Heated front seats, 19" Carrera Classic Wheels, Sport Steering Wheel, CD Changer, Bose High End Sound System, Power Seats, and the wheel caps with the colored crests. The car from Nevada, so it hasn't suffered the road rash that most cars get in Colorado, though it does have the 3M clear bra on the front bumper, hood, and fender tips. This thing is in excellent condition, and just needs a good cleaning. I'll post more once she's cleaned up.

Haha listen to Philoo - wants to know all the details. Our friend may want to be a bit more discrete than that. BUT if you'll pardon my lack of tact I'm going to have a guess;
Given that the car is CPO it suggests he bought at, or through, a dealer and he probably traded in he 996 so figuring out what cost what gets a bit fuzzy.
I'd guess they stickered the car at or near 50 and wrote the trade up for 25, so a difference of $30K.
How'd I do?
Oh, and nice car by the way. We're just having a bit of a 996 vs 997 debate in an other thread and styling wise my *personal* opinion is that the 997 looks a bit better. Performance wise my experience is that there isn't much difference. Reliability wise you've bought yourself some peace of mind.
cheers
Good for you, congrats on the trade. I know what you mean about a black 911, they are tough to keep clean especially compared to silver. GL with your 997...eventually, many of us will most likely join you at some point, and own a newer 911.
+1 for black is the best color for 996, but always cleaning it - and its always dusty almost imediately after you clean it...
I dont think I will be going newer - I feel lucky to have a P-car at all in this economy
OH dont get me wrong, I dont feel I "downgraded" in the least !!
I personally would like to get one 12-15 years older than the 86' if I had the money and the means
(or were you refering to the OP
)
Thanks for the comments! I'm gonna give it an oil change on Sunday. Does anyone know if the filter, o-ring, drain plug and washer from the 3.6 996 fit the 3.6 997? I would think they're probably the same, and I already have a kit in hand
Nice and the classic German silver is a beaut! Now on to driving impressions. What do you like, what's significant, what do you wish you had in the 996 (if any?)
Thanks Tim!
Driving Impressions: The dealer in Denver is a decent distance from home, so i was able to log some good seat time last night. I also went for a blast around the area after a quick dinner, but still only one nights impression. So far, the motor does feel stronger past 4k rpm. I'm not sure if that's just in my head, though it does feel like a stronger kick in the seat when your foot is into it. My 996 had the US sport suspension, so the ride in the 997 is a bit more compliant and less loud/harsh. Colorado roads rate an F (if that good), so this is actually a welcome change. Even without the sport suspension, the front end of the 997 feels like it floats less than the 996. I will miss the sport exhaust. I was amazed at how quiet the 996 was with the exhaust closed, and the sound with the baffles open was bad ***. The 997 is somewhere in the middle from a sound perspective. I had no issues with the interior of the 996, but I do like the 997 better inside the cabin. The Nav screen is pretty cool, and I actually like the gauge faces black instead of the aluminum in my 996. The 996 did seem to shift easier, but the clutch was heavier, though I may just need some time to get used to what might be shorter throws.
I've owned a ton of cars over the years, so yeah, I have that sickness. I will say that the 996 is the first car I was not happy to see go.
More 997 driving impressions after a bit more seat time and better pics once she's been cleaned up.

Thanks! Nothing major planned just yet. I'm still sorting out some minors issues. Just picked it up from the dealer where they balanced all 4 wheels and found the right rear needed a tweak. They also found water in the tire. The tire was drained, balanced and now she rolls true. The sunroof had stopped working, which turned out to be a loose fuse. A new fuse was installed, and now we're good to go there.
The first to second shift action is the last minor mechanical issue I'm working with the dealer. At first, they couldn't replicate the issue, but I took the tech for a drive this morning, and he found it. He doesn't suspect the linkage, but possibly the second gear syncro. He said that they would need to try to tweak the linkage first before pulling the transmission. A reman could be in my future. I need to set the appt for the linkage adjustment, so we'll see what happens. Yep, dig the CPO warranty.
Thanks for the comparison and I must admit that I'm happy to see the 996 still holds up. The interior does look stunning though! Glad your happy with it!
I dunno.. the money paid to "trade" could have kept the 996 maintained for a long time, if someones pricing guesses were accurate.
In the end though, if your happy, that's all that matters.
