My car has 29K on it...I am always teased for keeping it super clean, even at the track!

I would do the IMS retrofit when you replace your clutch.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

My name is David and I have been reading this forum for years. I just had never registered. I do actually have a question that I was wondering if any of you could help me with. I have a 99 996 with 40k miles on it and I was planing on doing the IMS update. I live in Tampa and was wondering if anyone has a shop to recommend to do this update. What is the standard/average cost of labor for this swap? I know how much the part is and was planning on ordering it soon. I just left all my tools at my parents house (Savannah, Ga) and do not feel like tackling the job on my own. I have never worked on a watercooler and the idea of it makes me a little weary.
Thank you!
Regards,
David
welcome - great idea!!!
check with LNE and see if they have a list of appoved shops (I have not checked since my Indy is approved and doing this process on a regular basis)
GL and post a couple ppics of your ride!
Thank you for all the warm welcomes! The car is a c2 6spd and I really like the car (a little slow) but the IMS causes loss of sleep. I called easycare to try to get a warranty and when you get into the fine details with them, you will find out the IMS is not covered. It looks like Im going to have to get a warranty and an IMS swap which sucks.
I understand the loss of sleep thing... but keep in mind MANY MANY MANY MANY ims's worked perfectly today!!! My old car has 120k miles and is driving along, singing a song....all happy and living life to the fullest
dont loose sleep, read, learn, respond, prevent......enjoy!!
these cars are great and with the exception of a few parts they should last 200k or more. Now the parts can be changed, it's my opinion that one should take those steps...
if there was a warning or way of testing and/or the failure didnt cost $15-20k one could wait.... but those are not things that are offered prior to an event that could be more than most can absorb...
its just a phase, you'll get over it..... one guy here sold his perfectly good 996 cause he couldnt handle the idea that his engine MIGHT die someday. If you are one of those.... just sell and get a GT3.
I do really like GT3 and turbo model 911's, but I feel like I should wait a little longer to get cars like these. How can you be driven when you already have what you want?
Plus I would have to eat Ramen noodles for a little while and I did that enough in school to learn patience. I guess Im not as big of a Porsche fan as I thought.
Welcome David.
Why are you so paranoid about this?
Was it the recent article in Excellence?
Odds are you'll put on another 40k miles before having a major problem, probably more than that.
You're better off to just start a little fund in case of a problem.
I won't say IMS failure won't happen to you or to me, but I'm not losing sleep over it at the moment and just turned 50k miles on my 99 coupe. Lots of hype on all the forums, i still believe that the failure rate is relatively small and I'm willing to take that bet. Welcome to a great forum...pics of your ride?
I dont have any pictures of my car to post. I will get some as soon as it gets out the shop. I had an idiot back his truck into my car and tear up the decklid and the rear bumper.
As far as the excellence article, I have been following IMS failures for quite some time. I just feel like throwing 12k at something preventable with 1.5k worth of upgrades is a waste. I do feel like the sample of failures I have seen is misrepresented from the forums. Regardless, it still scares me.

I understand your sentiment, each person/driver has their own methodology/tolerance for dealing with this issue. Some say "she'll go for a while" (and they are surely right) others (like me) are deciding that the cost of the surgery (retrofit) upgrade is relatively inexpensive compared to the cost of an engine replacement.
For what it is worth a good friend of mine had to be towed off the track at the Glen, his 99 Cab, 6 speed with hardtop) had a catastrophic heart attack, now its bonioc with the replacement.....so he lost a day at the track and the bill to replace was steep. Did I learn anything??????? He was "driving" his baby at the track, what we are supposed to do.....he takes great care of his car, too. My car has 29K on it...I am always teased for keeping it super clean, even at the track! So, for me, my baby goes in for surgery next week. I know it is no guarantee, but it is peace of mind....and many more miles of smiles and track days, too. I would rather buy GT3 seats, roll bar, harness, wheels, suspension, exhaust, etc., but if the ticker is (potentially weak) then the rest of the stuff is useless.
BTW: Charles Navarro could not have been more generous in offering my shop his assistance, should they need it. I'm sure from waht I read in here, Jake would be happy to assist to. Call (e-mail) LN engineering or Flat 6 and I'm sure they will respond quiclky. A bit long winded so I apologize, but this forum has been the best to get information and opinions. Good luck
wow - its a little late for advise on a "good shop" for body work, but man... I hope it works out for you, if he messed up the deck and rear bumper I am guessing the work is several thousand to have done correctly... do you have pics or other data of it?
