Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

I removed and cleaned the two lower tensioners on my Boxster by pinning the crank pulley at tdc and just removing and replacing the tensioners one at a time.

Yes you most definitely can replace the 4-6 cylinder head chain tensioner with the engine in car.

Can I just replace the chain tensioners without making any other adjustments to the chain tension?

These are separate views of the same evidence. Frequency alone does not establish a fix, and these counts must not be added together.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I have just made a DIY IMS bearing replace. The IMS bearing really needed to be replaced... I could move the center stud with my fingers some millimeters.
I noticed that one of the chain tensioners is noisy (it sounds like metal against metal scraping when I push it). I just have a few questions.
1. I have not been able to locate the upper chain tensioner. Can I see it/remove it with the engine still in the car?
2. Do I have to lock the camshafts when I replace the chain tensioners? Or can I just replace them one by one without locking?
3. Can I just replace the chain tensioners without making any other adjustments to the chain tension? I think I can recall reading somewhere that the chains need to be adjusted to the correct tension...but I could be wrong.

I removed and cleaned the two lower tensioners on my Boxster by pinning the crank pulley at tdc and just removing and replacing the tensioners one at a time. The top tensioner is on the right hand side of the motor (as you face the crank pulley) above the scavenge pump. On the Box, you have to remove the AC compressor to get at it, don't know on the 911.
There are updated tensioners, so be sure you get the right ones.
What year is your car?
1. It is underneath the air conditioning compressor. To remove it, you need to remove the air conditioning compressor. Here is on my car:
2. No, you do should need to lock the cams, if you replace them one at a time.
3. Yes you can replace them without making other adjustments. However, before you start and afterwards I would verify timing. Remove cam caps, rotate engine by hand 3 times ensuring the marks on the ends of the camshafts line up the same way as they did before you replaced them.
Perfect thanks, my car is a C2 2002. Do you think I can replace it with the engine in the car? Otherwise I'll find out... now I know where to find it anyway.
Yes you most definitely can replace the 4-6 cylinder head chain tensioner with the engine in car.
You have to remove the air conditioning compressor first. The easiest way to do that is to remove the throttle body and plenum just behind it. Then you can reach around with your left hand and feel for the rear A/C bolt and remove it with a socket extension from above through the intake plenum. The front two A/C bolts are easily accessible. Then the compressor slides out and back, you can just rest it on the engine bay frame. From there you should have easy access to the 32mm bank 2 chain tensioner.
