I've had mine for over two years now and with the exception of the one I saw blowing up last week at an autocross I've yet to run across a failed engine.

I must say that his remanf'ed MY06 m96.04 is a real spoiler--I hope the MY02 m96 cars run like that!

These are separate views of the same evidence. Frequency alone does not establish a fix, and these counts must not be added together.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I like driving the 996 and I like how it looks. I think I have a good grasp of the IMS issue at this point... and my search is starting over.
The MY00 996 that I wanted never made it to the PPI. I found out why it ran so great and sounded so good... the motor was a reman (MY06, 3.6L code 04)--i.e. "no IMS fix for you". I can't imagine buying a "big bearing" 911 after getting educated on the IMS bearing situation. Thanks to rennlist for that.
Now it will be hard to go back to a MY99 or MY00 3.4L car. They seem slower and less happy to rev vis a vis 3.6L. Is that consistent with your observations? Of course the 3.6L means more $$$.
Now I am looking for 2002 coupe with a dry sump cover, original motor (so I can do LN Eng IMS upgrade asap) and low miles (i.e. <75,000) on the west coast.
I must say that buying a Porsche is not as much fun as driving them
I personally wouldn't eliminate a vehicle with a new engine just because the bearing can't be replaced. Keep in mind the likelihood of it blowing up is so small especially with the updated bearing. But if piece of mind is what you're after then I guess it makes sense.
The search is part of the fun. Try using search tempest to aggregate craigslist ads and sort by distance from your zip code.
Give us a better idea of what you are looking for (colors, options, etc.) to get some help looking.
Good luck!
i have been looking on the east coast here and found just a few a would buy, hopefully at the end of the week i may have some good news if the inspection turns out well.
Two of the 996 that I seriously considered had experienced massive IMS failure (is there any other kind?). One owner shared his entire IMS experience--a real horror story. He now has ~$35,000 (OP+clutch+rebuild) invested in a MY00 with 80,000 miles that he chooses not to drive and is priced well above the market. It is good to not be him. He now knows all about the LN Eng upgrade and regrets not doing his homework.
The second MY00 owner did not know about the IMS failure or the remanf'ed m96 swap done before he bought the car. I uncovered the car's history piece by piece. I must say that his remanf'ed MY06 m96.04 is a real spoiler--I hope the MY02 m96 cars run like that! I haven't found one to drive yet.

So jbeede...how did you definitively determine that the motor in the car you were looking at had a second generation IMS bearing?
I never got a straight answer in my post where I *specifically* asked that question. All I got was a lot of hot hype about how the bearing doesn't actually fail that often (erm) and how I wouldn't know what bearing I had until I removed the trans and had a look for myself.
Have you figured out how to decipher the engine numbers? It seems silly to reject an otherwise good car because it *might* have a better IMS bearing installed.
Facts before fear ya know.
I still would consider these to be outliers. I've had mine for over two years now and with the exception of the one I saw blowing up last week at an autocross I've yet to run across a failed engine. Plus if you get the IMS Guardian (when it gets released) that can at least alert you of an impending failure.
It's just to me it really sounds like you thought the last car you drove was an excellent purchase and ran great. I know those first impressions would win me over and make it difficult for me to continue shopping knowing I gave up the one that made me feel good.
But again this is a highly personal decision and I can understand the concern with purchasing a potential money pit!
