I spoke with a mechanic when asking about the ppi and he said that he did mostly a visual, road test, and check with the computer for codes and over revs.

When you guys got your ppi done, what do you guys usually have done? Compression test? Leak down test? I spoke with a mechanic when asking about the ppi and he said that he did mostly a visual, road test, and check with the computer for codes and over revs. He said that a leak down and compression test would not show if the ims or if there was a cracked cylinder was going to go out in the future. He said that they would cut the oil filter and look at it. He also said that he would do the compression or leak down but would be an extra charge that he said he would or would not recommend based on test drive and inspection. What do you guys think?

Inspecting the oil filter is a good idea only if the oil has some miles on it. A lot of the shops I talked to seem to stress the visual checks and paint thickness--not exactly what I am wanting to know. My local Porsche dealer resisted doing compression and leak down saying that there would be a CEL if there was a problem.

I heard the same thing as J Beede. That compression and leakdown was not necessary and just a lot more extra money. I ended up not doing it but they did use a stethoscope to check the health of my IMS. First oil change I did, I ripped up the filter and found one tiny shaving. Was very happy with that result.

J, what did the porsche dealer charge you for the ppi inspection. I called one as well and they were charging $325. Most of the shops varied from $150 to $600 which included a compression and leak down test. Although one mechanic pretty much said the compression and leak down test if there was a problem would throw a cell.
