Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Suggestion
They said it was the original design which they have changed to avoid the problem of the modules "failing with battery disconnect." They did offer me a 20% discount on a new unit if I sent in the old one but I haven't done it yet.
Leading evidence: 'Install about a month ago' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'original design' (1 discussions; 0 report identifying it and 1 suggest it). The most frequently discussed action is 'Disconnect ." they did offer me a 20% discount' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. It also gives me the ability to unlock the doors automatically (something Porsche "forgot", set the interior alarm on with the top still down and disable the whole thing for any Porsche service or inspections.

Add the SmartTop module to it and you get one touch operation of the top using the button on the dash, you can raise the two rear windows with the top down, and it will also roll up the windows when you close the top using the remote.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Guys, just installed a marvelous product called SmartRemote (a chip, actually) that lets me open and close my convertible top using my standard Porsche remote key. Don't have to buy a new key or reprogram anything from the factory. Works just like the European models but better. It also gives me the ability to unlock the doors automatically (something Porsche "forgot", set the interior alarm on with the top still down and disable the whole thing for any Porsche service or inspections. I have a 2004 996 Cab and bought the SmartRemote chip from MotiveMods.com. Ask for Roger. They have them for many other models/cars also. Installation was super simple. No wiring or cutting involved. See pictures of installation attached. I definitely recommend this for all convertible owners.

Good products. I installed both about a month ago.
I have both the Smart Top and the Remote Top from from Mods4Cars. Got the Smart Top 5 years ago and love it. Got the Remote Top about two years later and loved it until it failed about 12-15 months after it was installed. They said it was the original design which they have changed to avoid the problem of the modules "failing with battery disconnect." They did offer me a 20% discount on a new unit if I sent in the old one but I haven't done it yet. Sven was very courteous but I am still a little disappointed that the Remote Top failed after such a short time. Seems they discovered a defect/problem and remedied it going forward but not retroactive.
Gosh, sound like Porsche
U am wondering it this Smart Remote is form another supplier.
Cost was $290.00 shipped anywhere. This is NOT an advertisement - just a heads up to people looking for a solution to the convertible top problem. I am a private owner. I have now purchased the Smart Top module as well and will post about it after installation.
As promised, I am reporting on the Smart Top module I installed after I did the Smart Remote.
Everything works as advertised. I now have one touch control of the cab top open and close using the dash buttons. On 2004 models only, it fixes the problem of the windows not rolling back up when closing the top using the Smart Remote.
My setup does have the separate power lead so it should hold up.
Overall. I'm very happy with the ease of installation and simplicity of use.
Would recommend it to anyone wanting ease of top opening.
