Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Suggestion
Thinking of doing this as preventative maintenance, how long does it take to replace the thermostat?

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I think I'm going to give the car's cooling system a bit of an update with a new water pump, a center radiator, a new thermostat, and fresh coolant. It's been 10 years, I'm going to call that a lifetime on this batch of coolant. I notice that the factory replacement thermostat is sold as an insert and I'm wondering what tool is required to install it into the housing. Any idea where I can pick it up? LNE's low temperature thermostat is also available as an insert as well as a complete assembly....

Nevermind, I tracked it down on the LNE website. It's ~$15.
Sean, I've already got the aerokit so adding the center rad is fairly easy. I've been doing more and more DE events and I figure the extra cooling capacity may be useful.

Clamp small and big drivers rear hoses. (1 minute)
Drain the case. (10 minutes?)
You can buy the bolt on t-stat with housing & gasket. (5-10 minutes)
Or use the tool noted in my post above if you buy just the t-stat and keep the housing (a little longer)
Unclamp hoses, refill your drained coolant into tank with vacuum system or per atmospheric bleed instructions (less than 30 minutes depending on which way you do it).
Then you drive with the bleeder open for a few days and make sure to burp the system with a few blips above 5k, and very regularly check the coolant level and top off as necessary until the system is fully bled.
An improperly bled system can lead to hot spots, air pockets, cracked heads, and worse.

Looks like an hour labour + a few litres of coolant on top of cost of the thermostat. Cheap and easy preventative maintenance.
Holy **** that's expensive. I think we pay $45 USD for 1 gallon = 3.78 L for Porsche.
If money is no object... don't worry. Otherwise...
You can use VW G12, it will be fine.
