Suggestion
The main thing is to clean the plastic really well to get any dirt and residue from detailing products off before you start.

I bet it would tighten up if I could replace those pieces...

I noticed there seems to be excessive play and I wonder if you can replace the two plastic (white) pieces that my fingers are on in the picture to "tighten" it up.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

So I pulled out my center console so I can refinish it and I was checking out my shifter and its linkages. I noticed there seems to be excessive play and I wonder if you can replace the two plastic (white) pieces that my fingers are on in the picture to "tighten" it up.
I just did a schnell from vertex it was all billet and came with the primary linkage to the main shift cable also all billet, and was about half the price of the b&m. IMO it's a really nice shifter.
Hmmm, I'm shopping for a SSK right now. This is intriguing. Anyone else have any thoughts on the matter? Normal convention is to go with B&M but it's $280.....did you order the Schnell billet linkages for 40 bucks as well?
Thanks,
~michael
Sorry can't find the reciept, I know they 2 options 1 with the lower link and one without. IIRC was a lot cheaper to buy them together. If you want i can pull up the boot and take a pic. Sorry about receipt but I'm painfully irresponsible
No no no, don't bother with that, although I appreciate it.
I'll have to keep doing my research. Seems a lot of people like the 997 shifter, but it still seems to have some plastic parts and reduces throw by ~15%....I'd like a bit shorter if I could. This is looking encouraging.
Thanks,
~m
Hey, I can't decide if I should paint my center console gloss black or matte black.... What do you guys think? I'm also going to spray the ignition rosette since it is worn too.
Another vote for the 997 OEM shifter. I had factory 996 SSK before and found that too notchy and too much effort to shift compared to the 997 OEM shifter, which is MUCH more precise than the stock shifter.
the B&M short throw is $229 at bumperplugs.com
I'd buy the B&M over the Schnell. Schnell quality has been questionable in the past.
I picked up the 997 shifter from Suncoast when it was $180. I'm waiting on my painted console from Bumperplugs to install the shifter.
I like matte better. If you do it right, cleaning won't be a problem. I just painted my console and center stack graphite and it turned out great. I did the ignition and hazard rosettes as well, but you don't see them in the picture.
SEM Color fast. You can get black gloss BTW but the prep is harder because you have to get the pebbling out of the plastic.
Use SEM Plastic adhesion promoter as the base. The main thing is to clean the plastic really well to get any dirt and residue from detailing products off before you start.
I washed it with soap and water, then scuffed it with some fine steel wool, and finally wiped it down with a plastic safe solvent. It's really easy. Just take your time and follow the directions on the paint. Especially the temp ranges. It really makes a difference.
At the risk of sounding like a broken record, the schnell was all billet and came with the main link to the cable also all billet for under $200. Maybe they had probs in the past but this thing is bullet proof IMO
IMO---The B&M cannot compare with the OEM 997 SSK. I tried the B&M and did not like it. Very hard and notchy. The 997 SSK is very precise and tight. You are right it cost more $400+.. But in MHO, it was worth it..
Already painted... black with enamel clear coat... polishes very nicely too
I'll post the method I used to refinish the pieces if anyone is interested.. let me know.
Yeah that looks good!
Back to hijack.....I found a used B&M sitting on the indy's shop floor when I was wondering around the other day and his customer sold it to me for 80 bucks. Figured at that price, it was worth a shot. I like the length of the throws now, but as others have said, it's stiff and notchy. Not bad, but not nearly as silky smooth as the stock one was. We'll keep it in for a while and see if it grows on me.
End hijack. Good job on the console!
Also, back on topic, are those these floor mats?

Looking for something to keep the interior clean. I've got some burly rubber mats on my other car, and I love being able to simply hose them off. Actually works wonders keeping the rest of the interior clean.
