I did...read the last paragraph where I mentioned that I used the jack to support the weight of the vehicle but had a jackstand under the suspension point.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Went to a NAPA today and found that Mobil 1 was on sale for only $4.99 a quart!
So of course I stocked up and went home to change my oil (I was planning on doing it last week but went to the beach instead). This time I decided to time myself from start to finish just to see how long it takes.
Now remember I don't have a lift and I'm talking from the time that I walk out of the door to my garage to the point where I turn the car on. In total the time was 37 minutes! Not bad considering how much oil you need to dump in the engine and the fact that I was using a pretty small funnel.
How about all of you, how long does it take you to change oil on your 996?
How do you lift your car for underside access ? I was thinking to get a racing Jack from Harbor Freight and lift the car onto wheel ramps at the rear wheels - good enough to do the job ?
Yes, that only takes about 2-3 minutes to complete. It could be faster but the thing is so hot it burns my hands when handling it even through my gloves.
Yeah I should have had some beers handy considering how hot it was under that car!
I used a jack right in front of the passenger-side rear wheel. Then I placed a jackstand under the suspension point on that same tire and jacked up the car just enough to allow me enough clearance to place the oil drain pan under the car and get my allen wrench in there to undo the drain plug. So the weight of the car was mostly on the jack while the jackstand was there for safety. All of this was done without removing the tire so that's another measure of safety as well.
Good job! We all know that less time under the car means more time in it. Don't want to be Debbie Downer (I prefer Dirk over Debbie).......please don't depend on a floor jack to support your car while under it. If the jack came down while underneath the tire is not going to save you.....the clearance is not enough and you are a gonner. Please use jackstands at each wheel.
I also did the Napa Auto parts $4.99 a quart oil change this weekend.
Took me a bit longer - first time on my 996.
I love the oil fill being able to snap out of the holder and bend up for the refill - no funnel needed
I also cut open the filter to inspect - nothing found - very clean
I did...read the last paragraph where I mentioned that I used the jack to support the weight of the vehicle but had a jackstand under the suspension point. I would never trust the jack by itself but I did keep it under tension since I knew the jackstand was there if anything went wrong. I always use three forms of support anytime I'm under the car - the jack, jackstand, and a tire (whether it's on the car or not).
But thanks for the reminder for anyone planning on not doing the same!
Thanks for the tip. I should go and buy another couple of cases since I'll be changing the oil again after the summer months.
NICE
my yard is flat and I live on a cul-de-sack with a 4-5 inch curb...I can drive into my front yard and back up so the ars hangs over the curb..then I dont even need a jack...slide the pan in and pull the plug.
the only thing I have to be careful of is one time I did it after driving with the motor at normal operating temp....the exhaust scorched my grass...
as you can see in my red car avatar pic, I giot it greened up again

I changed my oil/filter yesterday and it took longer than 30 min. to drain. While I was waiting I cut open the old filter(OEM) and looked for any metal or plastic pieces and found absolutely none. Used a new crush washer, installed a new filter and rubber gasket, cleaned the plastic filter cartridge and wiped down adjacent areas. Installed the drain plug and torqued it and the filter cartridge, and filled new synthetic oil. Like Ed, I can slide under easily, if I back my Porsche up to the edge of my garage floor where it overhangs. Went for a ride and my 996 was eager to show its appreciation. Only drove 3,350 miles since my last oil/filter change and that was 9 months ago.
Thanks for the tip.
Got 3 cases today at NAPA. =)
I don't jack my car up to change oil.
My driveway is slightly sloped.
I hang my car's rear end over the lip of my garage.
Because of the organic compounds found in synthetic oil it does have a shelf life. There's no sense in buying more than you can use in one oil change. You have to look for the freshness date on the container - like milk.
But if we're talking 3-4 months does it really matter? Plus what about those who actually follow the oil change intervals of every 12k-15k miles? I don't doubt that in time the oil can deteriorate but I just thought that would happen over a period of years and not months.
Picked up 3 cases at Napa on rt 46 west in saddle brook just past Walmart. Asked the guy what he had left and he laughed. He has more than a pallet left, or about 950 quarts.
I will look for an expiration, never thought about that. Anyone else check?
I don't think anyone here is going to wait five years to get around to using their stored oil. Even for drivers who have garage queens I think yearly oil changes are still the norm.
Swung by NAPA today and it was still on sale for $5/gallon.
Picked up 6 qts of 5W30 for my wife's car, and 9 qts of 0W40 for me- wiped them out of 0W40, too!
Hmmm the NAPA in Epping NH is having customer appreciation this weekend and the Patriots Cheerleaders will be there..................I knew I needed a reason to go there!
Let my 9-year old son change the oil in our 4Runner today. He did everything himself, I was rather proud. I've had him do most of the work before, but always got it all set up and handed him the tool- this time, I said "Here's the oil and the filter, don't use my 0W40. You know where the tools are, I want you to do it all by yourself." Not surprisingly, he was a little hesitant and kept asking me if he was doing the right nut, and hadn't yet learned those hard-life-lessons about dripping oil or hot engines, but did a really good job and I only had to help him a little. By this time next year, I think he might be able to do it all himself.
Shame the local auto hobby shop ($4/hr lifts!) won't let you in without a driver's license, or I'd have him help me change the oil on my Porsche, too...
My father owns an auto shop in Colorado (not for Porsches although he did rebuild an air-cooled 911 a few years ago) so when I told him about the oil I use in my car he responded by asking, "Why are you using oil so thin on that car that generates so much heat in the engine?" But I explained to him the variocam and that Porsche recommends it so he left it with an "Okay..."
I love oil threads!
