Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Reading a recent post on the fidelity of the sunroof, I'm suddenly nervous. In my 944, neither the AC nor the sunroof worked. The AC was fixable only with better resources, so I tackled the sunroof, which was a straightforward gear replacement. In this car, both are "perfect" so far however I've been riding with my windows down and sunroof open, fearing that the German engineering that is Porsche does not extend to the AC, and now I'm thinking, darned if I do (AC), darned if I don't (sunroof), and that I'm shafted either way.
What's your experience with the reliability of the sunroof vs. AC?
Knowing already a few of the answers that I'll get, let me post them here, and save you the time:
1. Suck it up, newb; learn to fix your car and open the damn sunroof!
2. Suck it up newb; learn to fix your car and use the AC!
3. Didn't we tell you to sock away extra cash for both of those fixes?
4. No one can tell you how to drive/use your car; do what you want.
5. If you're afraid to use it, you'll never drive it, so go nuts and fire up the AC!
6. Whatever, dude. Go drive a Toyota.
Any other thoughts?
The warranty purchase was for that specifically, and I carry a can of marbles around in the glove box so that I fool myself every time I hear metal-on-metal rattling around.
Funny you should mention that....
Contrary to non water cooled Porsches, the AC is an improvement. So far in my 5 yrs of 996 ownership, both the AC and sunroof work just fine. Now, about the other weaknesses of the 996...
A/C is use it or lose it. I try to run it a couple times in winter months to circulate the refrigerant. I don't understand the sunroof concern. It's just another window.
Oh, and go drive a Honda.
was the sunroof repair tough? Mine rattles when closed and doesn't operate normally. It has to cycle through tilt before it will open for the first time. I looked at the shop manual and pulling it all apart looks like a huge pain.
Applies to old 944:
Honestly if I can do it, you can do it. Depends what's not working, though. I was having the typical torque-on-the-motor-stripped-my-gear-teeth and I needed to "simply" install new gears. My sunroof did not move at all. There are a few DIY guides that you can follow. If it's your 996 sunroof that rattles, that I can't help, although my headliner rattles when the sunroof is open; has the typical lost-clip problem that I can probably tackle one day.
I disagree... AC is Use it or Dont use it - loose it, they need recharge once in a while, maybe several years but if you dont use it when you go to recharge it will cost ten times as much because it rusted up inside
sunroof, in mine the plastic sliders broke and the roof was only usable as a pop up...or a fix something for $$$$ that I realy didnt care too much about, so it was a pop up.
lastle if your AC dies I will give you mine, its weighs too much for me anyhow
