I use the car as a DD and will do anywhere from 4-7 DE events per year.

I have read that the change in temperature can distort the metal in your exhaust and do not want to have to replace my cats if I decide to go that route.

Unless you run a turbo or highly tuned NA car on the track, it is not for "street use".

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hi everyone. I need to order a set of bypass x pipes or sport cats from Fabspeed. I currently have 45K miles on my 996 C4S and this is the first time I am replacing this part of the exhaust. I have BB mufflers and want your guys opinion for my 911.
I live adjacent to Seattle so it rains a lot and I enjoy taking the pig out in the wet. I have read that the change in temperature can distort the metal in your exhaust and do not want to have to replace my cats if I decide to go that route. I may consider ceramic coating the cats to avoid this problem.
If I decide to go with bypass pipes, I will purchase the extender/spacers to aviod the C.E.L. issue and prepare for my neighbors hating me more.
I use the car as a DD and will do anywhere from 4-7 DE events per year. My main goal is to avoid future problems with the reliability of my vehicle but a more open exhaust and half the price of sport cats also is appealing.
All comments and insight appreciated. Thank you.
Don't know about aftermarket exhausts but I've driven through more rain and standing water (and snowy slush) than most in my Boxster and Turbo and the stock exhausts have never had any problems from this.
If you want to avoid future reliability problems with your vehicle in the exhaust area I'd advise you to leave the stock exhaust alone.
You can pay a heavy price for a more open exhaust: More and unpleasant noise (droning/booming). Reliability issues. Impossible to correct error codes due to the substandard aftermarket exhaust O2 sensor positioning and weak converters. Even performance might drop off. These engines are pretty sophisticated air pumps and a change at one end can possibly affect the engine more than making it more noisy.
Sincerely,
Macster.

Just my opinion. I see WWWAAAAYYYYY more threads on people trying to get rid of bypass pipes than anything else.
It is a novelty, neat at first. Unless you run a turbo or highly tuned NA car on the track, it is not for "street use".
Go with the high flow cats, and you won't be disappointed, nor will you have any stupid CEL's to deal with.
I loved my Fabspeed cats, but my car is more of a workhorse than a play toy...
I have the 100 cell FVD x-pipe cats with PSE... the sounds is incredible... honestly bypass pipes are WAY too loud... there is no way you can live with those on a daily basis...
loudest is 100 cell; 200 cell are also loud but a little tamer but by no means give you a tame sound...
FVD xpipe cats carry a lifetime warranty and that's why I went with them; for your 2004 you should go with 200 cell cats so you won't get a check engine light...
You really have no concerns with driving in wet weather...I'm not sure why you're so concerned about this. All modern cars are equipped with cats and they drive in all sorts of weather. I agree with the others regarding bypass pipes. On a daily driver it's going to get old very quickly. Not to mentioned I doubt theres a lot of power to be picked up in a NA car with bypass pipes.

you were right!
its sounds amazing I agree... all the guys at the track were coming over telling me how good the car sounded on the front strait away...
don't know what it does for hp but the car seems more responsive and it has better breathing on the top end...
