POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

LN mentions to use at most 5w40 with the spin on adapter. Porsche has been pushing 5w50 for a little while now with their own product. I picked up a case of M1 5w50 to try. Is the spin on filter going to create an issue with flow with the higher warm viscosity??

POST 2Original post

I sure hope not because I have a case of FR50 5w50 sitting next to me and it's going in this week!

POST 3Original post

Quotes source post: 17444073

XP6 is 50WT

POST 4Original post

Running 5w50 should not pose a problem with the spin on oil filter adapter in warmer climates, say where ambient air temps are over 80F.

POST 5Original post

My engine was rebuilt by Flat Six Innovations. Below are the oil, fillter instructions. Interestingly, the KN HP 1007 does not fit, the threaded oil filter is larger than the male receptor on the engine. The Mobil M!-102 is what was on there. oilfilterdata.com is a good resource for this.

POST 6Original post

Quotes source post: 17551750

Same filter with the solution vs no-solution?

POST 7Original post

I ended up using a STPS3614xl, was in a pinch. It is supposed to the the correct filter. The seller gave me a Wix 57348, which is not on the list provided, and is apparently not a high volume filter. So I have not used it. But it explains why he had it, I was wondering why he would have a filter that did not fit according to the Flat Six Innovations paperwork. Given that FSI's own paper work was not correct, it took a bit to figure it out. Had to cross reference to the Mobil filter that was on there. M1-1102a. I was talking to my buddy that is a successful club racer and he said they like Rotella, the high zinc content is similar to what FSI recommends. Same I put in my old Land Rover with flat tappets. Not that it is better, but another alternative. I put in DT40. I suspect that with his super short service interval it does not matter. Anyone want a KN HP 1007?

POST 8Original post

I did have the IMS done, if that is the question. missed that.

POST 9Original post

The only filter we recommend is the Napa Gold. If you have an IMS Solution, you can use the 1348.

POST 10Original post

Quotes source post: 17552538

so @Charles Navarro can you use the 1258 napa gold instead of the 1348 on the IMS solution for when you run XP6 for track use? or is the 1348 sufficient for XP6?

POST 11Original post

I have been running Driver FR50 5w50 for over 2 years now with the spin on adapter and the Napa filter with zero issues and solid oil pressure. I was in a pinch before without a filter and used KN HP 1007 which worked fine as well. I believe the solution has a different thread or something along those lines and can't accept the same filters as regular spin on adapter. I use my car all 12 months in mid-Atlantic area.

POST 12Original post

Quotes source post: 17551750

Im more interested/surprised as to why a Driven oil isnt on that list.

POST 13Original post

Quotes source post: 18905360

FSI used to recommend various oils based on the engine they would build. Driven might not have been the best oil for a particular motor while it was fine for other ones they built.

POST 14Original post

Quotes source post: 18905360

Right? Considering the all the talk around ZDDP you would think it would be there. Conspicuously absent are the street Motul oils, which LN had as a recommended oil for so long.

POST 15Original post

There is a max level of zink & Sulphur before it will start plating the elements in the cats and killing them. IIRC Didn't Joe Gibbs Inc. recently sold off the Driven line to another manufacturer... ?? Maybe thats the reason? Buyers dont always maintain the same quality level.

POST 17Original post

I didn't know the NAPA Gold 1258 was an option. I just bought one. It looks like it will mate with the spin-on adapter. It is wider and taller than the 1042. I have the Retrofit. The KN 1007 filter will also fit, but I worried the inlet holes are smaller and one less than the NAPA 1042. Anyone here using the 1258?

POST 19Original post

Quotes source post: 18906151

The Napa website has the flow rate for every filter.

POST 20Original post

Quotes source post: 18905321

The Solution uses a 3/4-16 thread where the standard spin on oil filter adapter for the 97-08 models has a 13/16-16. I highly recommend against using the K&N Gold or M1 filter. They use a synthetic resin media which is very restrictive, not to mention the build quality of the filters are suspect. I still only recommend Napa Gold or Wix filters - not the Napa Platinum or Wix XP, as those also use the really restrictive synthetic media like the M1 and K&N Gold filters.

POST 21Original post

1358 is smaller than the 1042. Both are 21 micron filters. I'm going to try the larger 1258 tomorrow. ****. I change this all up every 1000 miles so none of this last long, but I like the idea of a larger filter.

POST 22Original post

Quotes source post: 18906244

Just for reference, the 1042 was used on the Corvette for years running either a 0w40 or 5w40. With the shorter oil change intervals we observe, this should not be an issue.

POST 23Original post

Here is the link to the correct Napa site to look up filter info: http://napafilters.com/

POST 24Original post

Charles, Yes I know about the 1042 from your research and have used them since I bought my 996. I was just wondering if the 1258, which is larger and has the same micron filter could also be used. Yes, it extends below the oil pan, but not an issue for me. And thanks for the comments. Theo

POST 25Original post

Quotes source post: 18906356

Theoretically the 1258 will work as well. Even though the filter is much larger diameter-wise, the gasket is just slightly larger OD and should still seal up properly with the spin on filter adapter. Just make sure the filter gasket is fully supported and makes contact with the face of the filter adapter.

POST 26Original post

Thank you. The gasket appears to be 2mm wider and the spin on adapter can accomodate an even larger gasket. I will report back on it when I install it.

POST 27Original post

A month late to report I installed the NAPA Gold 1258. Fits perfectly and sealed completely. I like that it has a larger surface area so it can dissipate a tiny bit more heat from the oil. It is longer and extends a few millimeters below the oil pan, but that is not an issue for me. It has been on for a month and ~800 miles, which at this house means it's about to be swapped with an oil change.

POST 28Original post

MY Flat 6 engine is now 4 months and about 4K miles. I have the solution. Broke the motor in per instructions from flat 6. 300 on some dino oil. 1500 on dino oil 1500 on lubrimoly Still on lubrimoly. All flitters have been Napa gold.

POST 29Original post

Quotes source post: 19000002

I thought Jake (Flat 6) only recommended Driven Oil's?

POST 30Original post

@Charles Navarro Any reason not to use a 0W-40 in a hot climate like Texas? I have the spin-on adaptor. Amsoil makes a 0w-40 and 5w-50 in their signature series. No 5W or 10W in the 40 weight. I didn't know if the thinner oil at startup would be an issue for bore score.

POST 31Original post

Quotes source post: 19000327

I'm not too familiar with Amsoil's products. Do they have any moly in them? In the past, I believe they marketed long drain intervals for their oils as a big selling point of using their products. I'm not sure if they are appropriate for this application. I would recommend a 5w40 over a 0w40 for hot climates. Typically a 5w40 will be more shear stable and will have a slightly higher HTHS viscosity when compared to a 0w40.

POST 32Original post

Quotes source post: 19000051

His oil recommendations were very dependent on the engine that was built. From some build docs floating around the interwebs I've seen LiquiMoly and other oils being recommended. I think he recommended the Driven oils for stock motors due to the higher moly content.

POST 33Original post

Quotes source post: 19000942

Yes, I use it in my track car and have it tested each oil change. They have a fair amount of Moly in their signature series. My last oil change was DT40 and will be tested at the next oil change. Then I'm using the 0W-40 Amsoil and will have that tested at the end of its period. In my Blackstone tests, Amsoil Signature averages 225 ppm Moly in my track car.

POST 34Original post

Quotes source post: 19001037

Good to know, thanks for sharing.

POST 35Original post

My FSI car also had Liquimoly recommended as the main oil (3.8 street with upgrades .... )

POST 36Original post

Quotes source post: 19001653

Liquimoly actually has very low Moly.

POST 37Original post

Quotes source post: 19001689

was surprised by this as well, I was directed to this from another thread. This is Molygen and not Leichtlauf High Tech which Ive been meaning to submit a virgin sample of but havent gotten around to. https://www.speediagnostix.com/new-o...iquimoly-5w-40

POST 38Original post

Quotes source post: 19001689

Correct. I've brought this up in the past that just because there is moly in the name you can't assume the oils have moly in them. If you add Ceratec to the LM A40 oils, that gets you to about 300 ppm of moly if you blend at the recommended ratio. I'll also add that the benefits of Ceratec go away once you change your oil, so you'll want to use it at every oil change. If running DT40 or DI40, no need to use Ceratec as these oils already have plenty of moly.

POST 39Original post

Problem with DT 40 is we lost the main distributor in the North West so its all cross country ordering for the most part.. I can buy Liquimoly at Napa .. Jake only recommended the Part number 2044 version... Which is not a shelf stock part anymore so the last change I ordered it off amazon and got same day delivery.. I still use the Napa Gold filters..

POST 40Original post

Quotes source post: 19009400

We have plenty of stock of DT40 and ship it free. https://lnengineering.com/joe-gibbs-...rts-02406.html

POST 41Original post

@Charles Navarro Why do you recommend not prefilling the oil filter with the spin-on? I've always filled my oil filters to reduce the amount of time the motor is without oil pumping through the engine.

POST 42Original post

PSA: I buy Liqui Moly 5w40 Synthoil in 5 litre jugs from USP Motorsports . They are in Florida . They charge $36.99 per jug with free shipping . I just bought 3 jugs yesterday . I use LM because FSI built my two engines and that's the oil Jake recommended me to use . I texted Jake the other day to see if he still recommended LM . Reply was yes . Your results may vary 😋

POST 43Original post

For pdxmotorhead. LM2044 is Liqui Moly for diesel engines. Is that right? Just checking, because if that works, I'm willing to try it.

POST 44Original post

Quotes source post: 19009466

I will add that Jake's recommendation of LM oils are specific to certain engines he has built with Nikasil cylinder bores. For a stock Lokasil or Alusil engine, these LM oils do not have sufficient moly to assist with bore scoring prevention without the addition of LM MoS2 or Ceratec additives.

POST 45Original post

Quotes source post: 19009439

We have seen several instances where the oil system ends up with an air lock and the engine won't have any oil pressure. Jake recommend against pre-filling any oil filter. There are plenty of engines with filters that go on upside down or sideways that cannot physically be pre-filled, so installing a dry filter on your engine won't cause any issues.

POST 46Original post

Quotes source post: 19009506

Charles you are correct . Both of my engines have nicky cylinders. I may look into adding LM MoS2 as I can't imagine it would hurt . This is Richard F by the way , we haven't chatted in a while . I stay in touch with Jud .

POST 47Original post

Quotes source post: 19009506

Ah-HA! That explains a lot. I have a fresh FSI Stage 2 and I've really been puzzled by the difference in oil recommendations between FSI and LN. Thanks for adding clarification. Jake recommends Liqui-Moly 2040 (1 liter) or 2041 (5 liter). It's available via Amazon. Haven't checked my local AutoZone...

POST 48Original post

NAPA used to shelf stock both the 2040 and 2041. Now they stock another version as their front stock, its same viscosity but "greener" I believe several builders are waiting for oil testing on it..

POST 49Original post

I ordered 3 jugs of LM on Monday and they were just delivered , hard to beat that . And I am rural in the mountains in Georgia .

POST 50Original post

Yep I order them same way.. I try to stay 1 oil change ahead..

POST 51Original post

Also for those with the IMS Solution that run the Wix 51348 you can also use the 51215 . Identical specs per the Wix website . The difference is the 51348 has an anti drain back valve the 51215 does not . Because the filter is installed with the threads/opening at the top no drain back valve is needed . The 51215 does have a higher PSI burst .

POST 52Original post

Quotes source post: 19011495

We have a list of alternate filters on the LN website. The 51215 is listed and will indeed work just fine: https://lnengineering.com/oil-filter...n-adapter.html

POST 53Original post
