It does have a fuel filter and it shouldn't be too hard to replace but everyone spills a lot of fuel doing it.

Well, in the interest of completing the loop and for the benefit of those that might follow and want to change their own fuel filter on a 996.1 C4 here is the skinny.

Maybe it's weather or the time of year, but I think it's running better.

Coverage and how to read this overview
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Did I miss it? One or two guys have YouTube videos. Looks like they fumble a lot with a couple of things.
1. Lots of fuel leaking in the engine bay when the fuel lines are disconnected. Is there a way to minimize this?
2. Tough to get the filter physically removed from its cave in the front of the driver's side engine compartment. The coolant reservoir , secondary air injection pump, and associated hoses also live in that area. What all needs to be removed or not removed?
Most of the DIY write-ups are for C2 996s and the fuel filter is underneath the car so totally different.
Just drop the engine, it's only 8 bolts
A little bit of interesting info I found out when removing my 01 C4 engine- the fuel lines go over to the back of the AC compressor for a fuel cooler. Makes removing the AC compressor a real joy (I don't like refilling AC systems!).

Yes, thank you. Those are for the fuel filters under the car, C2. They have to fight with those a little to get them out away from the cooling lines but the c4 filter is in the engine compartment and it's a different juggle.
Yes, and they don't have a fuel return on the later models either. My car is January 2000 build. It does have a fuel filter and it shouldn't be too hard to replace but everyone spills a lot of fuel doing it. They also have a tough time squeezing it out of its cave.
Good idea. The guys I see posting videos don't drop the engine but I was thinking about lowering it on the mounts Just to get an extra bit of room for tools and hands. Not sure that it's necessary and don't see a good write-up to say it helps.

The only thing I removed was the airbox snorkel. Wiggled it and popped it out by hand as usual. Figured I would have to remove the coolant reservoir and/or the air pump if necessary. In the end I didn't even have to do that.
Not sure if I got lucky but people seem to struggle with this. I unclipped a couple of hoses in the upper driver's side of the engine compartment but that was it.
Would have been nice to have some stubby open end wrenches for the fuel filter fuel line nuts at the visible end of the filter because standard longer wrenches are a tight fit but they worked. 15 mm if I remember but don't quote me.
The only thing holding the fuel filter is the hose clamp so a small ratchet works well.
I read about someone who was trying to remove the entire fuel filter mount. I think they had a hard time and I believe it. Just undo the hose clamp, don't make it harder than it needs to be.
Old versus new.
I think it's an advantage that the 996.1 has a readily removable fuel filter outside the fuel tank making them easy to replace.
These cars are 20 plus years old and many have seen 100,000 miles of fuel, some of them much more than that, in those 20 years. I Can Only Imagine how many locations and gas stations of questionable pedigree that might include. Furthermore, Previous owners are dubious.
This is an inexpensive maintenance item and with a C4 doesn't even need lifting to jack stands.
Furthermore I did not find it necessary to lower the engine at all.
Maybe it's weather or the time of year, but I think it's running better. Don't have any objective data and it could be of my imagination. A lot of my car tuning is my imagination, an imagination that is quite possibly over developed as a result of my first 911 and it's glorious Weber carburetors.
Anyway, idle seems better and I wonder what was in that filter.
For now I'm back on the road.
So far I've had the filter top off once and it was to pump the fuel out of the tank while I had the engine at Flat 6,
I took teh opportunity to check. the lines and mine were still in good shape. My untested unscientific theory is the line weaken
in cars that get let sit with < a full tank of fuel, many plastics dont appreciate being sumberged in gasoline for years then let dry out..
I dont understand why the in tank lines are not just a steel assembly with a couple joints to allow removal. Probably "weight savings"
BTW, if you look at the tank diagram, even if you have the fuel filter you changed, I think you still have a filter/strainer in the tank ahead of the pump.. I could not find a good picture..
The book recommends removing the coolant reservoir. That was not necessary in my case. Good thing I didn't read the book. For those who might try this in the future I would hope it would work for you also.
Yep. I replaced mine (.1 C2) as a priority after purchase, for all those reasons. After many years surely it has done it's job long enough.
If you ever see a fuel truck filling the tanks at a petrol station, go somewhere else. If you are ever filing and the petrol pump is super slow, go somewhere else.
