Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

I used the eBay kit yelcab linked to above. It worked with modification.

I have & have used the eBay kit as well. It worked well except for the timing tool(the piece with the red parts) which had to be modified/reversed (one end is screwed on - it had to be u screwed, flipped over and put back together - in other words it was backwards.

Coverage and how to read this overview
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.
19 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.
Rennlist: 1 discussions
0 evidence records excluded for query context · 0 excluded by outcome qualification · 2 adjusted by outcome qualification.
2 acknowledgements have no verified action link; they do not establish a repair result.
Looking to purchase a few tools for our 2000 C2 911 project. One that we will need is a
5018 PORSCHE 911 BOXSTER 996/997/987/98
6 TIMING TOOL KIT. Ebay has a few options from $100-300 and then CTA manufacturing has the same kit witch range from $650-$985. Has anyone had a good experiences using any of the cheaper kits or recommendations on where to purchase a good set and not spend $1000. Any other must have tools, sockets, etc. recommendations appreciated. We've done servicing on a few P-cars, 928, 987s, 996 but this will be the first engine pull to troubleshoot the ticking sounds coming from our project car.

I have this, a little expensive but it has everything for the variocam (not plus) timing job.
B9612K Porsche Cam Timing Kit – Baum Tools
And then there is this for $100. You need to find an additional cam end alignment blade but that is cheap.

I used the eBay kit yelcab linked to above. It worked with modification. I needed to sand down the piston pin tool and glue the tip on to get it to work. The rest was fine as is.
Note that I was using these on a 3.6 with Variocam +.
Thanks everyone for the recommendations, I'm leaning toward the CTA or Baum tools kit, unless I get some other positive feedback on the chinese knock off kits.

The ebay tool has everything you need. I don't understand what tool
@yelcab
is talking about that it does not have.
This looks like the one I purchased in 2018 for $123

It worked well except for the timing tool(the piece with the red parts) which had to be modified/reversed (one end is screwed on - it had to be u screwed, flipped over and put back together - in other words it was backwards. This became obvious while trying to time the engine. Once flipped it worked perfectly
I missed that the blade type cam tools were not in that kit too. Mine had both for Variocam and Cariocam+. I used the blade type in my 02. They worked fine. The came clamps were a bit tight but went on when aligned carefully.
You can (and should) get that blade. It is not expensive as a part of the kit to torque the cam bolt. You sound like a shop, and a shop really needs good, reliable tools that work multiple times. Translation: buy quality expensive tools, buy just once,
Thanks for all the input and advice. Yelcab, we were under the impression that the VarioCam didn't start till the MY2001? We're not a shop although somethings we've amassed so many tools for the mix of cars. we're just two brothers who use to be into Corvettes and have made the jump to Porsche's about 5-6 years ago. Between the two of us we have 8 P-cars, only one project at a time
Our newly acquired Zenith Blue 2000 C2 will be the biggest project since his 79 Stingray rebuild years ago.

Jandackson, Which kit do you have that will do both types "VarioCam and VarioCam+ " cars? if I'm spending money on tools I'd like to make sure they support numerous versions or models if possible.
Zenith Blue Metallic code L3AX looks almost identical. If the sunlight hits the zenith blue from different angles it has a purplish look? I had a BMW that was maroon and had a different look at various lighting angles...
I love the rarer colors...that's one reason we took the project. If black, white or silver we might have passed, I wished the interior was black however, as I'm not a big fan of Savannah Beige and how is wears.
They are essentially two different kits. The three chain engines don't need the hold downs and use a tool to rotate the cam from the chain side. That makes them less expensive.

Yelcab prefers to lock the cam on a 5 chain engine with the tool from this kit rather than use the tool that allows you to rotate it into position.
