Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

2 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

  • Rennlist: 1 discussions

0 evidence records excluded for query context · 0 excluded by outcome qualification · 0 adjusted by outcome qualification.

0 acknowledgements have no verified action link; they do not establish a repair result.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I got a 2001 996 a few weeks ago. The mufflers have the typical rust along the bottom seam. They are not leaking, YET. Has anyone succeeded in welding these back to a solid condition? I was wondering if some grinding and then welding a SS channel over the joint might do the trick.. Am I fooling myself? Is the problem inside too difficult to solve? Also, the support brackets are baldly rusted where they are bolted to the engine. (Why they used uncoated hardware for these is a mystery to me.) Does anyone have advice on replacing these? Looking for a pair of brackets to replace these, should anyone have a pair. I see some on ebay. Same with the mufflers if they can not be repaired. I appreciate any advice on changing the brackets, etc.

POST 2Original post

When I had my engine being built I took the exhaust hangers/brackets to be media blasted . Then sprayed with high heat silver paint . My mufflers were similar to yours . I bought another pair locally that were in great shape and sent them to Fister . They did their mod and then coated the exterior . I think they use Cerakote but I could be wrong .
